The pragmatic Anglo - Saxon method of competition (reliability, track record, ability to get on with the client) is hardly the environment to encourage creative young architects, or to give them the opportunity to acquire the skills of their craft or the experience of developing and testing ideas through construction. It is no surprise therefore that the young partnership of Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates looks towards Europe for its inspiration. These are architects not interested in pursuing the spectacular, nor are they interested in concentrating their energies in the evolution of strategies to win commissions in the commercial market. Instead they would like the opportunity to practise architecture that has social relevance and physical meaning. They are inspired by the European architecture of the last 30 years (Rafael Moneo, Alvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Herzog &de Meuron, Roger Diener), as well as a younger generation of European contemporaries. Along with some of their London colleagues, especially Tony Fretton and Caruso St John, they share a fascination for the work of Peter and Alison Smithson. Since setting up in practice together in the early 1990s, Sergison Bates has carved out a distinctive, more European - style niche in the UK. They are to be respected for their commitment to a rigorous way of working and a challenging body of work. The achievement of this young practice lies not with any singular work, rather in the fact that they have accumulated both a convincing way of working and talking about architecture and, as this monograph of "2G" review testifies, a body of work to be admired.

David Chipperfield's new building for the Kunsthaus Zurich now stands in all its splendour on Zurich's Heimplatz, opposite the old museum building of 1910 designed by Karl Moser. Its opening to the public in October 2021 will make the Kunsthaus Zurich Switzerland's largest art museum. Following the two previous volumes on Kunsthaus Zurich's architectural history and the design for turning it into an art museum for the twenty-first century, this book documents the genesis of David Chipperfield's extension from proposal through political debates about the entire project to completed structure. It features a foreword by David Chipperfield and an essay by Christoph Felger, executive architect for the project at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, that discusses the design concept, the promise made with it, and its fulfilment. A conversation between Christoph Felger, the director of the City of Zurich's Building Surveyor's Office Wiebke Roesler, and Kunsthaus Zurich's director Christoph Becker, and architecture critic Sabine von Fischer, as well as numerous illustrations and plans sound out this new volume.

In 2014, Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu were named Designers of the Year by Wallpaper, largely for work they had created under the name of Neri & Hu Design and Research Office. The duo founded the firm in 2004 in Shanghai, with an additional office in London, and for more than a decade now it has been the source of incredibly creative, innovative architectural designs for projects around the globe. The first book ever published on the firm, Neri & Hu Design and Research Office presents a broad selection of its work in architecture and product design, lavishly illustrated. The projects covered include seven renovations in Shanghai; three retail spaces, including Neri & Hu’s office building; beautiful designs for a tea service, chair, table, and picnic basket; and several major ongoing projects, including a private residence in Florida and hotel renovations in London and Shanghai. A beautifully produced book, with contributions from Alejandro Taera Polo and David Chipperfield, Neri & Hu Design and Research Office is a testament to a firm working at the height of its powers.

The James Simon Gallery, the new entrance building between the Kupfergraben and the Neues Museum, marks the architectural conclusion of the Museuminsel ensemble in Berlin after 180 years. It forms, together with the Archaeological Promenade, the centrepiece of the master plan developed in 1999, which has since served as the starting point for all further planning on Museumsinsel. The book, published by David Chipperfield Architects on the occasion of the opening, is dedicated to the building and its cultural contexts. Photographs by Thomas Struth present the completed building, both within its urban context as well as in intimate close-ups. Texts by prominent architects, historians and sociologists complement the artistic photographic documentation.

David Chipperfield’s architecture stands for clarity, minimalism and a combination of the tried and tested with innovation. He aims for architecturally, socially and intellectually ambitious solutions. This extended reprint of a monograph of publications in DETAIL has been supplemented by three current projects. As usual, it gives a glimpse behind the scenes, describes processes and provides plenty of building details.- projects and processes- three new projects: renovation of Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery) in Berlin; conversion for Jacoby Studios in Paderborn; new construction of Hoxton Press residential towers in London.
