"Often considered as the first phenomenon of mass media in history, the use of books and prints by Protestants has been widely studied and has generated a rich and plentiful bibliography. In contrast, the production and use of these supports by the partisans of the Counter-Reformation have not received the attention they deserve, especially in the context of the Low Countries. The twelve contributors provide new perspectives on the efficacy of the handpress book industry to support the Catholic strategy of the Spanish Low Countries and underlines the mutually beneficial relationship between proponents of the Counter-Reformation and the typographic world. Ce travail a pour objectif premier de renouveler l’approche historiographique faite sur Balthazar Gérard (assassin de Guillaume d’Orange en 1584) et Jacques Clément (assassin d’Henri III en 1589) à travers le prisme du « martyr ». Pour ce faire, une étude de leur construction et de leur représentation martyrielle a été faite sur base d’un corpus de source hétérogène et regroupant autant des publications écrites que des sources matérielles et iconographiques. A travers la notion de « martyr politique », ce travail tente de montrer en quoi l’image martyrielle de ces deux personnages fut importante pour les communautés qui s’en réclamaient mais aussi à quel point elle marque un point critique atteint par celles-ci. « Malheur aux peuples qui ont besoin de héros » disait Hegel. Ce n’était pas tant un souhait que le constat d’un moment où une société fragilisée cherchait à se raccrocher à des héros. Ces derniers, approchés dans ce travail à travers les concepts de « fascination » et de « fiction-politique », se sont exprimés dans les « martyres » de Balthazar Gérard et Jacques Clément.
