Abstract

L'eau est rare au nord du Mexique, et la gestion de cette ressource limitée est devenue une priorité nationale. Dans ce contexte, la Sierra Madré occidentale, château d'eau pour tout le nord du pays, est un espace particulièrement convoité. La relative abondance en eau y a entraîné le développement de pâturages et d'exploitations forestières, provoquant une surexploitation des milieux et des ressources. La déglaciation des sols liée au surpâturage et au déboisement conduit de fait inévitablement à celle de l'eau et menace aujourd'hui le potentiel de toute cette région. À travers des études de cas précises, cet ouvrage montre comment la gestion de l'eau est liée à celle de l'espace et nécessite la prise en compte des besoins de l'ensemble des usagers, du bûcheron au gardien de troupeaux. Cette gestion patrimoniale, qui permet de régler les nombreux conflits d'usage, forme un modèle de développement dont de nombreux pays de montagne pourraient s'inspirer.

Abstract

The atmospheric part of the water cycle is accelerating, affecting hydrological dynamics, especially in tropical and Mediterranean areas, where landscapes, soils and territories are particularly vulnerable to global warming and land use changes. Across four continents and a dozen of different regions or basins, this SI strives to highlight the environmental and societal vulnerabilities and their links with the water cycle. The basins of three of the greatest basins in the world in terms of streamflows—the Amazon River, the Orinoco River and the Congo River—show their unexpected behaviors. This book aims to present past and present status to improve future land and water management.

Abstract

The future of West Africa depends on the capacity of its agriculture to ensure the food security of the population, which should double in the next 20 years, while facing up to the new risks resulting from climate warming. Indeed, the changes in temperature and precipitations already operating and that should become more marked will have serious effects on agricultural production and water resources in this part of Africa in the near future. One of the keys to meeting this new challenge is the adaptation of rural societies to climate risks. To gain better knowledge of the potential, processes and barriers, this book analyses recent and ongoing trends in the climate and the environment and examines how rural societies perceive and integrate them: what are the impacts of these changes, what vulnerabilities are there but also what new opportunities do they bring? How do the populations adapt and what innovations do they implement—while the climate-induced effects interact with the social, political, economic and technical changes that are in motion in Africa? By associating French and African scientists (climatologists, agronomists, hydrologists, ecologists, demographers, geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and others) in a multidisciplinary approach, the book makes a valuable contribution to better anticipation of climatic risks and the evaluation of African societies to stand up to them.
