Abstract

The effectiveness of Education for Sustainable Development depends on the ability of schools and teachers to embrace pedagogies that reduce the gap between the rhetoric of education for the environment and the reality of classroom practices. This book responds to the need to better understand the nature of the relationships between agency and structure that contribute to the development of educational rhetoric-reality gaps in order to inform processes that most effectively facilitate pedagogical change. This book explores the issues of pedagogical change through the experiences of Australian primary school teachers faced with the challenge of implementing an environmental education program in which young students were positioned as active participants in the social processes from which environmentally sustainable practices could be developed. These teachers were required to adopt pedagogies that often represented the antithesis of their well-established teacher-directed approaches. Through the use of Anthony Giddens’ Theory of Structuration this book provides unique perspectives of the teacher mediated manner in which certain elements of structure and agency interrelate to enable and constrain classroom practices—essential understandings for school principals and educational policy developers who aim to effectively implement pedagogical change. This book also demonstrates that the Theory of Structuration provides a valuable ontological research framework, and provides social researchers with practical guidance for how to relate this theory to specific research issues.

Abstract

Music therapy is an internationally recognised field of professional evidence-based practice. Qualified music therapists use the engaging, non-verbal aspects of music to create relationships in which therapeutic goals can be pursued and needs of clients addressed. This is the first book to focus specifically on the ways that music therapists provide support for the development of the special and necessary bond between parents and their infants, where some vulnerability is experienced. In the book, music therapists from four countries, Australia, Ireland, the UK and the US describe their practices with reference to contemporary theory and research. Throughout, the chapters are illustrated with engaging case material. Many of the authors are the world leaders in the area of music therapy to promote parent and infant bonding. Others are having their first opportunity to describe their work publicly in print. The focus in each chapter is on the need for this work, the theoretical underpinnings of the practice, and the music therapy practice itself. The book is arranged in 3 sections. The first section covers work in therapy sessions with children and their parents. The second section describes programmes where the music therapist leads a group of parents with their infants, such as the renowned Sing & Grow in Australia. The final section presents work with medical patients and their families including in the neonatal intensive care unit, and for cancer patients.

Abstract

Music is acknowledged as an arts medium with a universal and timeless potential to influence our behavior and emotions. As international research about the effects of music on well-being expands it is timely to consolidate and report the gains in the profession of music therapy through this first Oxford Handbook of Music Therapy. With a foreword by Professor Colwyn Trevarthen (Emeritus, University of Edinburgh) this handbook provides an overview of some populations who are served in music therapy, with information about the contexts in which practitioners work. These include mental health services, hospitals, education programmes, and rehabilitation services. The people who come to music therapy either through self-referrals or by referral from a practitioner or service are described in detail by practitioner researchers most of whom are qualified at doctoral level. A range of chapters from internationally recognized experts has resulted in a substantial multidisciplinary, and pluralistic account of recent advances and applications in music therapy. The handbook presents an overview of many of the models and approaches that have developed in the field since its inception. Many of these chapters were written by the founders of the methods. Multiple perspectives to practice are honored in this text, with music therapy predominantly described as a relational therapeutic practice throughout.(https://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199639755.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780199639755)

Abstract

What if the most powerful education our students ever receive occurs when they study off-campus? This book takes as its premise that the powerful potential to de-center and dislocate students preconceptions that off-campus study can stimulate and the urgent need for students to gain a broad understanding of the interconnectedness of our world, requires us to question and rethink how we deliver undergraduate education. The authors ask whether we should strive to make this experience available to all our students as a necessity rather than as a supplement or interlude -- using it to fuel their education and inspire their careers. They make the case that effective off-campus study (whether study abroad or study away) begins and ends on the home campus, requiring its integration into the curriculum, entwining on-campus and off-campus experiences, and making them mutually reinforcing. They offer evidence that off-campus study, when properly designed and implemented, can have a multiplier effect on learning, particularly when combined with other high-impact practices; asserting it can provide access to complex cultural and scientific problems in their natural context, adding practical and experiential components to classroom learning, and serve as a springboard for more advanced study and research when students return to their home campus. This book proposes that faculty or departments go beyond the generally episodic ways that currently link on-campus curricula to off-campus experience. It aims to speak, beyond specialists in international or intercultural education, to faculty, deans and provosts who may have little direct experience of study abroad, and feel unprepared to address an issue that is assuming a growing importance as disciplines and institutions address the complexities of our rapidly changing world. The goal of this book is to fuel such conversations.
