Abstract

Abstract

This volume offers a broad description of the development and perspectives of literary sociology within the discipline of comparative literature. It brings together researchers who work (implicitly or explicitly) within the field of comparative literature and who opt, methodologically, for a broad approach that sees literary-theoretical problems as part of more general cultural issues. Several research options that marked the history of literary sociology or that can be considered as belonging to its legacy are presented in this book. The point of departure is the observation that, in the 60s and 70s, a number of academics were convinced that the discipline of comparative literature should be organized around a sociological model. The tendency to consider literary sociology as the "pilot discipline" in comparative literature persisted until the early 80s. However, the earlier sociological models gradually lost much of their historical-materialist aura and began to take the shape of less stringent context-analyses. The newer forms of literary sociology often entered into an alliance with semiotics and (post)structuralism or elaborated upon Mikhail Bakhtin. Alongside this development, there was a tendency within literary sociology to adopt empirical methods. Moreover, contemporary literary theory has also witnessed the rise of new avenues of research that reflect the older literary-sociological principles.

Abstract

"This unique essay collection considers the impact of New York on the life and works of Wallace Stevens. Stevens lived in New York from 1900 to 1916, working briefly as a journalist, going to law school, laboriously starting up a career as a lawyer, getting engaged and married, gradually mixing with local avant-garde circles, and eventually emerging as one of the most exciting and surprising voices in modern poetry. Although he then left the city for a job in Hartford, Stevens never saw himself as a Hartford poet and kept gravitating toward New York for nearly all things that mattered to him privately and poetically: visits to galleries and museums, theatrical and musical performances, intellectual and artistic gatherings, shopping sprees and gastronomical indulgences. Recent criticism of the poet has sought to understand how Stevens interacted with the literary, artistic, and cultural forces of his time to forge his inimitable aesthetic, with its peculiar mix of post-romantic responses to nature and a metropolitan cosmopolitanism. This volume deepens our understanding of the multiple ways in which New York and its various aesthetic attractions figured in Stevens' life, both at a biographical and poetic level."-- "This unique essay collection considers the impact of New York on the life and works of Wallace Stevens. Abstract

Wallace Stevens’s musicality is so profound that scholars have only begun to grasp his ties to the art of music or the music of his own poetry. In this study, two long-time specialists present a polyphonic composition in which they pursue various interlocking perspectives. Their case studies demonstrate how music as a temporal art form may affect a poetic of ephemerality, sensuous experience, and affective intensification. Such a poetic, they argue, invites flexible interpretations that respond to poetry as an art of textual performance. How did Stevens enact the relation between music and memory? How can we hear his verse as a form of melody-making? What was specific to his ways of recording birdsong? Have we been missing the latent music of Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Claude Debussy in particular poems? What were the musical poetics he shared with Igor Stravinsky? And how is our experience of the late poetry transformed when we listen to a musical setting by Ned Rorem? The Poetic Music of Wallace Stevens will appeal to experts in the poet’s work, students of Modernism in the arts, and a wider audience fascinated by the dynamics of exchange between music and poetry. Bart Eeckhout is Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and has been Editor of The Wallace Stevens Journal since 2011. His books include Wallace Stevens and the Limits of Reading and Writing (2002), five co-edited volumes on Stevens, and twelve co-edited thematic issues of The Wallace Stevens Journal. Most recently he co-edited The New Wallace Stevens Studies (2021). Eeckhout is a Member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. Lisa Goldfarb is Professor at New York University’s Gallatin School, USA, President of The Wallace Stevens Society, and Associate Editor of The Wallace Stevens Journal. She is the author of The Figure Concealed: Wallace Stevens, Music, and Valéryan Echoes (2011) and Unexpected Affinities: Modern American Poetry and Symbolist Poetics (2018), as well as co-editor of several edited collections on Stevens and special issues of The Wallace Stevens Journal. She has recently contributed a chapter, “Music of the Sea: Elizabeth Bishop and Symbolist Poetics,” to Elizabeth Bishop and the Music of Literature (Palgrave 2019).
