Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), one of the latest trends in online learning, have gained immense popularity across the world among leaners, instructors and researchers. In this study we conducted a thematic analysis on the most highly cited literature on MOOCs replicating the work of Halverson, Graham, Spring, and Drysdale (2014) which conducted a similar review of most popular literature on blended learning. We determined the most highly cited literature on MOOCs from 2008 through 2016 and analysed. The findings suggest that most of the prominent literature is focused on wider topics which focus on explanations of MOOCs instructional designs and explorations and student dispositions; while narrower topics have not been given due attention presenting gaps in the literature. These narrower topics, such as dropout rates, demographics and leaners’ experiences, can provide interesting and significant insights into challenges proving to be barriers for MOOCs to attain their transformational potential.

Recent reports show that blended teaching has become the most common delivery mode in universities across Europe. Nevertheless, research in this field seems fragmented, and some important questions and issues remain understudied. Regarding higher business and economics education, there is an urgent call for evidence-based, discipline-related guidelines for blended practices. This systematic review study attempts to respond to this call. It takes stock of relevant research and assesses 22 articles that were published between 2010 and 2021, using a theoretically grounded framework. The results of the study include a status of affairs and guidelines for shaping blended teaching approaches in contexts of higher business and economics education. The analyses are based upon five distinct categories, namely: instructor, blended teaching model, student, institution, and virtual setting. The study contributes to the understanding of effective blended business and economics courses, while it also reveals several areas for future research.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a new type of online education aimed at developing students’ skills online. The main objective of this study is to investigate the key areas of online available entrepreneurial skills learning in published literature. The integrative systematic literature review was conducted in the databases of Web of Science (WOB), Scopus, and ERIC. The final synthesis included 21 peer-reviewed, English-written, online available articles. The most significant findings include that the MOOCs’ market is a constantly growing, decentralized market with few but prominent players. From the paper’s analyses, it can be seen that the entrepreneurial education (EE) courses are popular and in constant change, and courses that applied gamification elements are more successful with students and their impact on motivation, entrepreneurship intention, reputation, and communication with other learners.
