Abstract

Germania inferior, province between the civilizations: Celtic periphery, immigration area for the Germanic tribes, Roman dominion. The South fertile and rich in raw materials, the North barren and inhospitable. Roman cities and native settlements, villas and farms; too Roman for the Germanic inhabitants, too Germanic for the Romans. Who did actually inhabit the province? To what social conditions did the regional environment give rise? What economic exchange was there between town and country, between the native inhabitants, the Romans and the free Germanic peoples? Archaeologists and historians now have more sophisticated tools and can provide new, more precise answers to these questions. The North of the province in particular has been explored more thoroughly, and the results of that research form the basis of this volume. The papers resultet from a colloquium with German and Dutch archaeologists and historians. They draw up an account of the current state of the art and show the perspective for future research.

Abstract

What changes coincided with Roman rule on the lower reaches of the Rhine? What aspects of life remained untouched by Romanization? What continuities and discontinuities can be identified in politics, society, the economy, and culture of Germania Inferior? Historical transitions such as the early and final phase of Roman rule are especially illuminating phenomena for the historical sciences. As small as Germania Inferior was, the province did not develop uniformly. Differences between urban and rural environments, between northern and southern regions, and between political, social, economic, and-cultural aspects of life have been found. The Dutch and German archaeologists and experts on ancient history who have contributed to this volume offer discriminating answers to the question of continuity.

Abstract

Whom did the Romans see as bandits ('latrones') and what did they understand as robbery '(lactrocinium)'? How pressing was the threat that the bandits posed? How did their contemporaries perceive the danger? This book examines the concept of 'latrones', literally bandits or robbers, and how the term was used in the Roman world of the late Republic and the early Empire (2nd c. BC - 3rd c. AD). Case studies focus on those who clashed with the imperial authorities, such as Viriatus, Tacfarinus, Maternus and Bulla Felix, and special attention is given to perhaps the best-known bandit of all, Spartacus, and to the men who impersonated the emperor Nero after his death. We are shown that the term latrones was not just used to refer to criminals but was metaphorically and disparagingly applied to failed political rebels, rivals and avengers. The word also came to represent the 'noble brigand', idealising the underdog as a means of criticising the winning side. The author therefore presentsbanditry both as a social type and as a literary construct, appearing in many different forms, in all types of writing. This wide-ranging and informative survey of 'outsider' groups in the Roman Empire will contribute greatly to our understanding of Roman social history.

Abstract

This volume aims at providing a selection of the most effective and widely employed protocols used in the Ewing sarcoma field. Chapters are divided into five sections detailing the molecular biology techniques used to analyze Ewing sarcoma including tissue preservation and methods used in morpho-molecular diagnostics and routine immune-histological analysis. Additional wet-lab protocols comprise in vitro techniques including re-expression and functional analyses of target genes together with in vivo tools and models such as patient-derived xenografts (PDX) and orthotopic xenografts for metastasis assessment in Ewing sarcoma. A full section on bioinformatic approaches to Ewing sarcoma covering ChIPseq, epigenetic and systems biology analyses finalizes this volume. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and clearly written, Ewing sarcoma: Methods and Protocols aims to provide methods to further the study of Ewing sarcoma and bring researchers one step forward in the quest to fight this devastating disease.

Abstract

Recent advances in the understanding of the biological basis of pediatric soft-tissue and bone tumors, especially owing to the advent of “omics” technologies, have led to an exponential increase in the current knowledge on the genetic and cellular patho-mechanisms that drive these diseases. This offers the unprecedented opportunity to develop and implement targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies, small molecules, oncolytic viruses, and immunotherapies in standard and/or personalized treatment regimens. However, to date only a few examples document a successful translation of discoveries from the bench to the bedside. Recent international expert congresses such as the “Pediatric Cancer Translational Genomics” conference (Phoenix, Arizona, 2012), the ESF-EMBO workshop on “Molecular Biology and Innovative Therapies in Sarcomas” (Pultusk, Poland, 2012), and the AACR special meeting on “Pediatric Cancer at the Crossroads – Translating Discovery into Improved Outcomes” (San Diego, California, 2013) further emphasize the urgent need for a more rapid and especially more successful translational process. Hence, we strongly believe that a Frontiers Research Topic aiming at this aspect would fit just in time and that it would have great potential to receive numerous contributions of outstanding experts of the field. The proposed Frontiers Research Topic shall provide a platform for active and interdisciplinary discussion, summarize current state-of-the-art knowledge on all basic research and translational aspects in pediatric soft-tissue and bone tumors, and offer new perspectives of how to further promote and accelerate the translational process. We welcome high-quality original research articles, brief reports, as well as opinion, hypothesis, and review articles, and especially encourage submissions from early-career scientists.
