"John of Salisbury has long been celebrated as one of the foremost humanists of the twelfth-century renaissance, an erudite correspondent, legal expert, historian, poet, diplomat and political thinker, and clerk to two successive archbishops of Canterbury, Theobald and Thomas Becket.
