Abstract

Evaluating the impact of tweets on stock market is a major challenge and has been addressed several times for American indices. The problematic relies on multidisciplinary techniques such as the use of data mining, text mining and statistical techniques in order to establish a link between tweets sentiment and stock market movements. Yet the literature has mainly overlooked less volatile market. In our paper, we focus on London stock market at two levels: the FTSE100 index and one of its individual stocks. We explain how we collect data and use sentiment analysis to annotate tweets automatically with positive, negative or neutral sentiment. Then we perform statistical tests to ensure we can safely apply regression techniques. Eventually, we try to build accurate predictions of stock market movements with various Twitter variables such as the number of tweets per day or the overall sentiment. The results for both the index and the company stock level are inconclusive because of low accuracies and F1-measures.

Abstract

For many years, food-borne diseases have become a universal worry. Until now, numerous diseases have been discovered and it appears that millions of illnesses, thousands of hospitalizations and deaths are caused every year by food-related diseases. As a consequence, three factors of interest are identified. Food safety guarantees that food is not going to cause harm while food quality assures that the necessary requirements are met. Finally, traceability guarantees the possibility to keep an eye on the movement of food throughout the food supply chain. The purpose of this Master thesis is to evaluate the capabilities of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology regarding food quality assurance and more precisely safety, quality and traceability from farm to fork.To assess the capabilities of the RFID in food supply chains, we can rest on previous research done in this specific field of interest. According to the obtained information, a framework showing that the RFID can be used to reach quality assurance of food along the chain and without interruption is established. However, when confronted to the reality, it appears that the framework presents some limitations. Then, the horsemeat scandal which took place in 2013 is examined in order to understand if responsible stakeholders were identified. The framework is applied to it in order to see if the RFID technology could have identified which actor had changed beef for horse meat. Even more importantly, the aim is to see if the scandal could have been avoided while ensuring the quality of meals. Unfortunately, it seems that the RFID alone is not sufficient to avoid such an adulteration. Finally, companies which want to implement the RFID to ensure quality along the food supply chain have to develop a cooperative project that has a unique objective. Therefore, since the project involves different partners, it can be interesting to show them the steps to follow. Additionally, if they pay real attention to the steps that are considered as success factors, they maximize their chance of success.

Abstract

Considering the ever-increasing air traffic, prediction of aircraft delays has become a more and more valuable tool to try to limit the negative impacts of flights running behind schedule. Better prediction of delays would lead to decreased costs, lower environment impact and better welfare for workers and travelers.Based on U.S. flight records for the year 2015, this paper aims at determining the variables that have the most impact on aircrafts delays, and also intends to analyze the various models used. Using data mining techniques such as decision trees, random forests, neural networks, regressions and support vector machines, various configurations of input and output variables are studied. The results are compared and interpreted, and the performance of the models are analyzed through indicators such as receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, misclassification rates, average squared errors, and lifts. Results show that the most influential variable is the time of departure, as delay propagation throughout the day increases the risk that a late-afternoon flight be delayed. Weather conditions such as rainfalls or extreme temperature play an important role too, and finally, delays depend a lot on the air carrier selected, with delays rates varying threefold amongst the top 10 carriers.

Abstract

In any hospital, laundry is an important issue that involves significant costs.Hospital linen includes bedding and working clothes. Consequently, this concerns both patients and nursing staff. The Centre Hospitalier Bois de l’Abbaye is about to purchase a new clothing vending machine, to enter into a new contract with a healthcare laundry facility and to buy new work clothes for nursing staff. In this context, CHBA encounters an opportunity to reorganize and enhance laundry management. The aim of this project-thesis is, through data and cost analyses, to make recommendations regarding:- The vending machine’s capacity;- The purchase or lease of linen;- The purchase or lease of work clothes;- The inventory management of linen.

Abstract

This master thesis will be devoted to the initiative’s evaluation, which aims at improving the urban mobility and decreasing the congestion, the urban consolidation centers. Many urban consolidation trials have failed, despite the fact that some studies have shown those initiatives’ advantages. This dissertation will try to understand the root causes of such failures and to reassess the urban consolidation centers advantages. Many of the advantages of consolidation only become apparent when sufficient volume is transported through the urban consolidation centers, located at the entrance to the cities. These new centers are struggling to acquire this sufficient volume since their use is an additional step and the cost of these deliveries is more expensive than direct delivery. In addition, transport perceive these centers as additional competition in an already highly competitive market where margins are extremely low. The reasons for this lack of success will be expressed in the second part through concrete cases and actions taken by carriers to reduce their costs while reducing pollution.

Abstract

Online reviews are becoming increasingly abundant, which makes them sometimes overwhelming for the users. To mitigate the problem of information overload, online retailers often proceed to display them according to their helpfulness to other users. In recent years, research has been aimed at finding efficient ways to automatically predict review helpfulness. This paper offers insight on both the most appropriate algorithm for the task of predicting review helpfulness in the specific context of class imbalance and high overlap of class features, and on the pre-processing techniques which can improve classifier performance in that context. To do so, it considers three classification algorithms: random forest, multinomial naive Bayes and linear support vector machine that uses stochastic gradient descent for learning. It shows that : (1) none of the considered algorithm exhibit satisfying performance when facing imbalanced datasets and similar class features; (2) the use of linguistic pre-processing techniques results in marginal or no improvement; (3) the use of frequency-based pre- processing yields moderate improvement; (4) re-sampling techniques are highly efficient, especially Synthetic Minority Over-sampling TEchnique (SMOTE); (5) Overall, random forest combined with SMOTE shows the best performance in terms of precision, recall and F1-score.

Abstract

In the context of always more competitive markets and customers more demanding than ever, understanding variables influencing customer satisfaction, trust and loyalty is paramount. In e-commerce, the demands placed on businesses in even greater. In the context of this project-thesis, I will seek to understand customers’ expectations and to identify the variables at the different stages in the customer purchase journey playing a key role on customer satisfaction, online trust and customer loyalty and repurchase intention. The final goal of this project is focused on the sportswear company Gore Wear and looks at helping them to increase their online sales. Firstly, a theoretical research using the PLS-SEM analysis method will be testing the impact of presumed antecedents of customer satisfaction, trust and loyalty is conducted. The results obtained will contribute to the formation of recommendations improving Gore Wear shortcomings. Secondly, a practical analysis of Gore Wear competitors and their service level aims at identifying more precise and concrete actions that could be implemented in the company’s services in order to increase its service quality. Finally, several leads of improvements that could help the company increase its sales are suggested. Each recommendation finds roots in results from the research and the benchmark.

Abstract

The organisational performance, due to its impact on the success and profitability of companies, is a subject that economists and the scientific community have long studied through analyses and interviews carried out with field experts. The current context of globalization has reinforced the relevancy of performance analysis as a differentiation factor in an environment where competition between firms has increased. This thesis aims at analysing the performance of PFS Belgium, a services company operating in the field of e-commerce, on behalf of its main client Pandora, based on key performance indicators defined in agreement between both parties. In this thesis, we will explore various aspects of performance sometimes set aside in favour of operational objectives that allow to meet the short-term profitability requirements.First, we will focus on enriching the performance reporting tools by adding new indicators to the pre-existing basis. Then, we will select the most relevant indicators, that will constitute the baseline of future analyses. A second internal analysis will aim at prioritizing indicators by decreasing order of their contribution to the objectives defined by Pandora and PFS. Afterwards, we will subject these key performance indicators to different types of statistical analyses in order to identify the relationships occurring between them. Based on these relationships, we will use prediction models that will assist the company in organising its activity based on the expected results. Next, we will carry out an external performance analysis using the benchmarking model. We will compare the values of Pandora’s key performance indicators with the corresponding values from the industry of reference, that of online jewellery. This external analysis will help the company understand its position on the market and adapt its practices accordingly, using the recommendations made in this thesis. The analysis template and procedure will be handed over to PFS managers in order to be replicated to other business clients in order to answer their needs. Finally, we will briefly list the limitations of this thesis.

Abstract

Enterprise wide project management offices (EPMO) is a recent notion that appeared in big companies in the last ten years. The idea is to homogenize the project management methods within an organization and to create consolidated reporting to the executives. At NRB, the latest acquisitions and the steady growth of the organization made it impossible to manage the entire project portfolio. With each silo gathering and working on the project data in their own way, it was no longer possible for the operations managers to know the overall situation and to identify operational issues related to the projects. This project-thesis explores this notion of EPMO and tries to bring a more academic vision of the subject. It defines the first actions that have been taken in recent months at NRB and suggests a list of methods to improve the structure. The implementation of the EPMO starts from defining a list of KPIs that reflects the most of the operational situation of a project and a method to track the alignment of the projects with strategic objectives of the portfolio. Moreover, it gathers the methods of collecting the project data through the notion of data governance and the methodology to consolidate and present the data through the notions of Business Process Automation (BPA) and Business Intelligence (BI).Finally, it takes into account the notion of maturity level in project management, seen as a real competitive advantage, through the acquisition of official certifications. The EPMO has then the role to be a support for the process owners in the study of this maturity level in order to improve it and ensure the future audits.
