Abstract

""The First Upper Egyptian nome, with its capital, Elephantine, was important in ancient times, as it stood on the southern border between Egypt and the Nubian provinces above the First Cataract. Since 2008, Alejandro Jiménez-Serrano has led an archaeological mission at the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa, where Elephantine's high officials are buried. In Descendants of a Lesser God, he draws on textual records and archaeological data, together with new evidence from his work at the tombs, to cast fresh historiographical light on the dynastic dynamics of these ruling elites. Jiménez-Serrano analyzes the origin of the local elites of Elephantine, and their role in trade and international relations with Nubia and neighboring regions, from the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. He explores the development of these power groups, organized as they were in complex households, which in many ways emulated the functioning of the royal court. Delving deeply into the funerary world, he also highlights the relationship between social memory and political legitimacy through his examination of the mortuary cult of a late Old Kingdom governor of Elephantine, Heqaib, who was transformed into a local divinity and later claimed as the mythic ancestor of the ruling family of Elephantine. The history of ancient Egypt has traditionally been written from a court perspective. This new history of a strategically important region not only modifies existing perceptions of provincial life in the Middle Kingdom among the elites, but also introduces new evidence to support more complex and detailed reconstructions of the dynastic families in power.""--

Abstract

Abstract

"Middle Kingdom Palace Culture and Its Echoes in the Provinces addresses the significant gaps that remain in scholarly understanding about the origins and development of Egypt's "Classical Age". The essays in this volume are the end result of a conference held at the University of Jaén in Spain to study history, archaeology, art, and language of the Middle Kingdom. Special attention is paid to provincial culture, perspectives, and historical realities. The distinguished group of Egyptologists from around the world gathered to consider the degree of influence that provincial developments played in reshaping the Egyptian state and its culture during the period. This volume aims to take a step towards a better understanding of the cultural renaissance, including the ideological transformations and social reorganization that produced the Middle Kingdom"--

Abstract

The History of the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa, located in western Aswan (Egypt), is an extended one. The archaeological site was in use from c. 2500 BC to the Byzantine Period. It comprises many tombs, mostly of Old Kingdom to Middle Kingdom date, belonging to the highest and administrative elite of Elephantine, 1st Upper Egyptian Nome. This area played an important role in the ancient state, even though it was far away from the royal court, due to the exceptional nature of its border territory, its proximity to Lower Nubia, and the expeditions and the trade with other neighboring lands. The Qubbet el Hawa Project, led by the University of Jaén and with the collaboration of the MoTA, conducted its first field season in summer 2008. Since then, research works have been carried out by a multidisciplinary team. This volume presents and offers, to the wider scientific community, a larger range of papers concerning the preliminary results of the 2019 campaign (11thseason) and updates the fieldwork carried out during the past decade. -- site de l'éditeur

Abstract

The genesis of early writing has generated a geat deal of interest and is often misunderstood. The goal of this scientific meeting was to gather scholars working on different graphical systems attested during the 4th millenium BCE in Egypt. Different material supports have been taken into account for this period, in Egypt and with comparisons in Mesopotamia. The authors also investigate the link between image and writing, the social and cultural contexts within which this transformation occured and the status of the sign. Indeed, it seems that the relation between the sign and the material support might be a key of understanding. Several promising avenues have been pinpointed while taking into account of the memorization techniques of oral performance in ritual practice.

Abstract

Since 2008 the University of Jaén has been carrying out research work in the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the work, a temporary exhibition was held at the Nubia Museum in Aswan, Egypt. One of the objectives was to show a multidisciplinary view of this work, as numerous researchers from different areas and scientific institutions are collaborating in this Jaén-based project. The exhibition aims to transmit a vision committed to historical and archaeological heritage, its promotion, protection and dissemination, not only internationally but also locally, making the people of Aswan aware of what is being done in their own city, making them participants in the progress of the University of Jaén's project. This has been achieved, to a large extent, by involving the inhabitants of the village of Gharb Aswan in the development of the work carried out each campaign. As an indispensable complement to any exhibition, this catalogue is published, which contains a selection of the pieces exhibited in the Nubia Museum. It is structured in a chronological manner, which allows us to see, in a way, an evolution throughout the history of funerary customs in Egypt during the Pharaonic period. The catalogue also includes an introductory section that helps to contextualise the pieces on display. The texts have been written by the collaborators of the Qubbet el-Hawa Project of the University of Jaén, all of them coming from different universities and research centres, both national and international.
