"The purpose of this book is to present the theory, dynamics, and technique of one model of group therapy--a model based on the psychodynamic understanding of human group behavior. This model is not, of course, the first to employ psychodynamic methodology. An examination of the literature on group therapy reveals many theories and techniques that purport to be psychodynamic. Unfortunately, few studies explain in detail just how psychodynamic methodology may be therapeutically used in a group situation. This book proposes to do just that. The author recognizes that there are still many unanswered questions about group therapy in general and even about this model in particular, and that a great need exists for properly controlled research. However, instead of attempting to resolve all the conflicting claims or to offer a definitive analysis of group therapy--a task clearly beyond the scope of one book or study--the present work is offered merely as a primer on the subject.
