Die Regionalsprachenforschung erfährt in den letzten Jahren einen deutlichen Aufschwung hinsichtlich empirischer Forschung und linguistischer Theoriebildung. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes spiegeln dies exemplarisch wider. Sie beschreiben einerseits verschiedene Aspekte des Forschungsgegenstandes "moderne Regionalsprache", d.h. der areal begrenzten und vertikal abgestuften Varietäten unterhalb der Standardsprache, und zeigen andererseits die in der Forschung bestehende Methodenvielfalt. In den einzelnen Beiträgen werden Forschungsprobleme behandelt, die sich vor allem aus der Sprachdynamiktheorie ergeben, nämlich die Genese der modernen Regionalsprachen, individuelle regionalsprachliche Synchronisierung, regiolektale Sprachgrenzen, Perzeption regionalen Sprechens, Sprachdynamik syntaktischer Variation, sowie Fragen zur phonologischen Tonakzentregelumkehrung im Mittelfränkischen und zur dreifachen Quantitätsopposition im Niederdeutschen. The study of regional language has experienced a significant upsurge in recent years in the areas of empirical research and the development of linguistic theories. The essays in this volume reflect examples of this. On one hand they describe different aspects of “modern regional language”, i.e. the locally defined and vertically graduated varieties within a standard language, as a topic of research, and on the other hand they demonstrate the variety of methodologies for this research. Individual essays examine research problems, primarily those arising from the theory of linguistic dynamics, such as the genesis of modern regional languages, individual regional linguistic synchronisation, the linguistic borders of regiolects, the perception of regional speech, linguistic dynamics of syntactic variation, and issues surrounding the inversion of tonal accent rules in Middle Franconian and the triple quantative opposition in Low German.

The study of how linguistic variation is acquired is considered a nascent field in both psycho- and sociolinguistics. Within that research context, this book aims at two objectives. First, it wants to help bridging the gap between researchers working on acquisition from different theoretical backgrounds. The book therefore includes contributions by both psycho- and sociolinguists, and by representatives of further relevant sub-disciplines of linguistics, including historical linguistics and dialectology. Second, in order to enable cross-linguistic comparison, the book brings together research carried out in different sociolinguistic constellations, as most obviously found in different language areas or different countries.
