Abstract

The Syrian Christians in Kerala, India, are an ancient community whose history has often been distorted by European colonialists and missionaries. Dr Sarah Knight has scoured libraries and private archives across Kerala, as well as many of the great libraries in Europe - in the UK, the Netherlands, and the Vatican - to put together a summary of the history of this often misunderstood ancient Christian community. This fresh and authentic perspective on the Syrian Christians' history, brings out the narrative which has survived within the community itself, despite the many periods of adversity and oppression when other interests attempted to rewrite their history. Dr Knight has combined her insider knowledge - she was born and raised within the community - with years of scholarship, which also underpinned her PhD from SOAS in the University of London. The book charts the history of the Syrian Christians in Kerala ('Malankara') from its origins with mission of St Thomas, through the migrations of Syrian clergy and families from the fourth century, through the adversity in the face of European colonialization and missionary work, to the current troubles caused by factions demanding they abandon their allegiance to the Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Abstract

By “Neo-Latin,” we mean the Latin language and literature from around the time of the early Italian humanist Petrarch (1304–1374) up until the present day, focusing particularly on its period of greatest intellectual and social relevance from the fifteenth until the eighteenth centuries. During these four centuries or so, Neo-Latin contributed significantly to the history of Europe, but also to that of other continents. Neo-Latin has increasingly been seen as a foundation of all early modern culture in the western world and its areas of influence. Accordingly we extend our parameters more widely: we focus not only on concertedly “literary” works but are also interested in, for instance, philosophical writing, scientific treatises, rhetorical manuals, and so on. The Handbook is divided into three sections: “Language and Genre” (chapters 1–13) combines philological discussion with literary criticism and/or rhetorical analysis, and, in most cases, considers these aspects within an author or work’s historical context. “Cultural Contexts” (chapters 14–24) focuses on pedagogy and education, academic disciplines, confessional, and sociological categories such as gender and class. The “Countries and Regions” section (chapters 25–35) expands the Handbook’s geographical coverage as broadly as possible, from the countries which generated a conspicuous amount of Neo-Latin writing throughout the early modern period (such as Italy, France, the German-speaking countries) to those countries which produced far fewer Latin works in terms of quantity, but where composition in Latin was still fundamental to the self-definition, development and ideological purpose of those writing it (as in the Americas and Asia).

Abstract

Different parts of the Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary are known from the second century onwards. Translations and adaptations into Syriac and other languages also became available from very early centuries. The compilation in the Syriac language was translated into Malayalam in 1925, but an English translation containing the full text did not exist at all. This gap has been filled now by this work. Sebastian Brock’s Foreword gives important information on the background and authenticity of the different sources that form the basis of the text. This biography is unique in that it brings together some very early accounts of the birth of Mary, the birth of Jesus, the flight into Egypt, and most importantly, the very rare account of the ‘Dormition’ or ‘falling asleep’ of the Blessed Mother.
