The idea of a balance of nature has been a dominant part of Western philosophy since before Aristotle, and it persists in the public imagination and even among some ecologists today. In this lively and thought-provoking book, John Kricher demonstrates that nature in fact is not in balance, nor has it ever been at any stage in Earth's history. He explains how and why this notion of a natural world in balance has endured for so long, and he shows why, in these times of extraordinary human influence on the planet's ecosystems, it is critical that we accept and understand that evolution is a fact of life, and that ecology is far more dynamic than we ever imagined. The Balance of Nature traces the fascinating history of the science of ecology and evolutionary biology, from the discipline's early innovators to the advent of Darwin and evolution, to the brilliant and inquisitive scientific minds of today. Blending insights and entertaining stories from his own remarkable life in science, Kricher reveals how evolution is a powerful engine that drives ecological change, how nature is constantly in flux and, in effect, quite naturally out of balance--and how notions to the contrary are misguided and ultimately hazardous to us all. The Balance of Nature forcefully argues that an understanding of the dynamic nature of ecology and evolution is essential to formulating policies of environmental ethics to guide humanity toward a more responsible stewardship of our planet's ecosystems.

"Galápagos is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and profusely illustrated natural history of this spectacular archipelago. Offering much more information than identification guides, the book provides detailed accounts and more than 650 color photographs of the islands' habitats, marine life, reptiles, birds, mammals, and plants, making the book a virtual nature tour of Galápagos. Galápagos experts John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin have thoroughly revised the original text, bringing all the taxonomy up to date and adding a wealth of new information. Individual chapters cover geology, ecology, human history, Darwin's finches and how Darwin came to his theory of natural selection from his visit to the islands, Galápagos tortoises, marine and land iguanas, mammals, seabirds, landbirds, marine life, and conservation challenges and initiatives. The concluding chapter covers each of the individual islands, including landing sites, unique plant and animal species, and points of interest, and serves as a wonderful guide for visitors as they move from island to island or plan a trip to Galápagos."--

"The 12-chapter text discusses the natural history of each of the major groups of animals that visitors encounter on the archipelago as well as providing information about Galapagos human history, geology, climate, and plant life. The first edition was designed as a mixture of information taken from current scientific literature as well as from Kricher's own experiences on the islands. The book was modestly illustrated with one color signature containing fifty photos as well as scattered black-and-white images, mostly photographs, in the text. Included was a map of the islands and some graphics of oceanic current patterns and basic plate tectonics. In the 13 years that have passed since the publication of Kricher's book, new information has been accumulated on such topics as the taxonomy and classification of Darwin's finches, tortoises, iguanas (both sea and land), as well as within other groups. The new edition will bring the narrative up to date, especially for animal species typically of most interest to visitors. There will be much more discussion of the effects of climate change, as well as various conservation initiatives and challenges: invasive species, human population increase on the islands, ecotourism increase, and fisheries controversies. In addition, many visitors now enjoy extensive snorkeling opportunities in Galapagos and this new edition will include more on Galapagos marine life, especially fish diversity. Most significantly, the book will have circa 600 of Kevin Loughlin's high-quality color photographs scattered throughout."--
