From the Vitra Design Museum a 1,000-page book that will deliver the most comprehensive overview on the history of furniture design ever published
The publication will document some 1,691 objects, 550 of them accompanied by detailed texts. The project has involved a team of over 70 authors and features roughly 2,595 images, from high-quality object photographs to reproductions of historical documents such as brochures, patents, interiors or reference works in art or architecture. The basis for the Atlas of Furniture Design is the furniture collection held by the Vitra Design Museum, one of the largest of its kind in the world with more than 6,400 pieces of furniture as well as the estates of such design legends as Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard, George Nelson and others. The collection comprises pieces by the most significant designers and manufacturers of the past 200 years. It includes early industrial furniture in bentwood or metal, Art Nouveau and Secessionist pieces, protagonists of classical modernism like Le Corbusier, Gerrit Rietveld, Charlotte Perriand or Marcel Breuer, postwar figures such as Finn Juhl, Gilbert Rohde, Pierre Paulin or Gae Aulenti but also postmodern and contemporary designers like Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders or Konstantin Grcic.

"The Magus of the North" : this was the epithet which architecture critic Sigfried Giedion found for Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), the best-known Finnish architect of his generation and a major exponent of a different kind of modernism - one conceived on a more human scale. His buildings, such as the Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium or the legendary Villa Mairea, stand for a masterly, organic combination of volumes, materials and light. His laminated plywood chairs made him one of the most important designers of the twentieth century, while his Savoy Vase has come to be seen as the epitome of Finnish and organic design. Alvar Aalto - Second Nature draws on recent research into Aalto's oeuvre to present a comprehensive overview of his work in architecture, design and urban planning, with a special focus on his dialogue with major contemporary artists - including László Moholy-Nagy, Hans Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger - and his fascination with film, cinema and photography. The book features eleven essays by authors from various countries. The catalogue section presents numerous original drawings from the Alvar Aalto Museum and pieces of Aalto furniture from the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum. A complete list of all his buildings and projects is also included, along with several photographic essays by the artist Armin Linke showing Aalto's buildings from a contemporary perspective.

Our homes are an expression of how we want to live; they shape our everyday routines and fundamentally affect our well-being. Interior design for the home sustains a giant global industry and feeds an entire branch of the media. However, the question of dwelling, or how to live, is found increasingly to be lacking in serious discourse. This book sets out to review the interior design of our homes. It discusses 20 iconic residential interiors from the present back to the 1920s, by architects and designers such as Assemble, Arno Brandlhuber, Lina Bo Bardi, and Josef Frank and by artists such as Cecil Beaton and Andy Warhol. Including historic and recent photographs, drawings and plans, the book explores these case studies as key moments in the history of the modern interior. Penny Sparke provides a concise history of the discipline of interior design, Alice Rawsthorn investigates the role of gender, and Mark Taylor discusses the discourse on interior design in the twenty-first century. Adam Štěch offers insights into the use of colour in residential interiors and Matteo Pirola offers a detailed and richly illustrated chronology of significant events in the history of interior design. In a portfolio of photographs selected exclusively for this book, Jasper Morrison explores what makes a good interior. In addition to inter-views with contemporary interior design practitioners, experts in the fields of the sociology of living and psychology provide further insight. This book a valuable resource for anyone interested in interior design. Exhibition: Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany (08.02.2020-23.08.2020).

Through models, material studies, prototypes and production examples of the Eames estate held at the Vitra Design Museum, this publication aims to reconstruct the genesis of the most relevant furniture designs by Charles and Ray Eames and shed light on their influence on the development of new and innovative materials. New insights into the thought processes and work practices of this legendary couple are revealed, designers whose work was driven by philosophical ideals that privileged knowledge, discovery and discipline, and embraced the potential of technology and science for the common good. Among the most important American designers, Charles Eames (1907–78) and Ray Eames (1912–88) are celebrated for their groundbreaking work in furniture, architecture, exhibitions, graphic design, toys and film. Charles and Ray married in 1941 and moved to California where they pursued their furniture design work with molding plywood. During World War II they were commissioned by the US Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. Their molded plywood chair was called “the chair of the century” by the famous architecture critic Esther McCoy.
