Contemporary art in context The main title of this second volume of Writings on Contemporary Art is borrowed from Claude Lévi-Strauss, whose thinking influenced a generation. Inspired by Marcel Proust, Lévi-Strauss wrote about the processes of producing painting, music, literature, calling the technique described by Proust “double articulation.” This volume focuses primarily on works of art in which the “first-order units” are themselves artistic works that are cited, recombined, and reworked. The concepts of “primary objects” and of “double articulation” deepen our understanding of the disruption of sequences and the disturbance of cultural traditions. The works of art discussed in this book inscribe themselves in a context of transmission that is modified and renewed for experience in the present. I, Existenz und Form (2015) Discussion of individual artworks and the function of art in culture From Rembrandt and Sturtevant to Hyun-Sook Song, Latifa Echakhch, Katharina Grosse, Pamela Rosenkranz, and Louise Guerra Neuere Kunst im Kontext Der Titel der Schriften zur neueren Kunst II ist Claude Lévi-Strauss zu verdanken, dessen Denken eine Generation geprägt hat. Er spricht in Anlehnung an Marcel Proust über das Verfertigen von Malerei, Musik, Literatur und bezeichnet die von Proust beschriebene Technik als „doppelte Artikulation“. Im vorliegenden Band stehen vor allem Werke im Fokus, bei denen die „Einheiten erster Ordnung“ selbst künstlerische Werke sind, die zitiert, neu kombiniert, bearbeitet werden. Von „primären Objekten“ und von „doppelter Artikulation“ zu sprechen vertieft unser Verständnis für die Unterbrechung von Sequenzen und die Störung kultureller Überlieferungen. Die im Buch diskutierten Kunstwerke schreiben sich in einen Überlieferungszusammenhang ein, der für die Erfahrung in der jeweiligen Gegenwart modifiziert und erneuert wird. Kunstwerke lassen sich nicht allein auf die Lebensgeschichte von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zurückführen, doch es wäre auch falsch anzunehmen, dass die Bedingungen der Produktion, seien sie sozialer, technischer oder persönlicher Natur, am Werk keine Spuren hinterlassen und für dessen Wirkung unerheblich wären. Es ist dieses Verhältnis, das die in diesem Band versammelten Texte diskutieren. Der Autor setzt sich mit den Künstlern Bill Traylor, Heinrich Anton Müller, Elie Nadelman, Annemarie von Matt, Sonja Sekula, Robert Müller, Patrick Ireland, Marcel Duchamp, Brian O'Doherty, Niele Toroni, Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Helmut Federle, Anselm Stalder, Pawel Althamer sowie Mai-Thu Perret auseinander und beleuchtet die Entstehungsgeschichten ihrer Kunstwerke im Kontext ihrer Lebensgeschichten. Works of art cannot be attributed exclusively to the life histories of artists, yet it would be wrong to assume that the conditions of their production, be they of a social, technological, or personal nature, leave no traces in the work and are insignificant in its impact. This volume examines this relationship while considering a selection of international artists.
