The central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, has a high metabolic demand. The physiology of the brain is such that it is easily affected by alterations in other systems, which in turn can compromise cerebral blood flow and oxygenation. Together the brain and spinal cord control the automatic function of our body systems. While other systems of body controls individual functions, central nervous system at the same time does many different functions, especially, controlling the function of other systems. This interaction between the brain and other systems is important when it comes to understanding how injuries to the brain can, at times, produce complications in remote organs or systems of the body, such as the lungs. This book explains the lesser-known crosstalks between acutely or chronically affected brain and lung, describing the pathophysiology of the lung following brain injury and discussing in detail the conflicts between the brain and lungs in relation to the tidal volumes, positive end-expiratory pressures, arterial carbon dioxide and oxygen levels, recruitment maneuvers and positioning, as well as potential therapeutic targets. .

Corona virus disease or COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection is the latest pandemic that has affected humans globally. The disease has manifested itself in several forms and is now the focus of research worldwide. This book covers all the clinical aspects of the novel corona virus disease, COVID-19, which is one of the most contagious diseases ever known. It includes topics related to basic sciences, such as the virology and pathophysiology of the SARS-CoV-2 disease. It includes chapters related to symptomatology of the disease and making diagnosis, preparation of the health care workers to deal with this global pandemic. The book includes chapters on anesthetic and intensive care management of COVID-19 disease victims as these topics are of vast importance. Additionally, it includes a chapter giving insight in to the ethical aspects of the issues raised regarding disposal of bodies of the victims, as this pandemic has taken many lives across the world. It includes a chapter on special considerations to patient population such as geriatrics, pediatrics and pregnant women. The book serves as a useful resource for practitioners and clinicians in any field of medicine. It is also relevant for residents, trainees, fellows pursuing their courses in emergency medicine, anesthesia and critical care as well as postgraduates and even undergraduates. The book will serve as a ready-reckoner and useful guide for physicians from varied specialties during their clinical practice.

The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of several drugs is expected to be known to clinicians and researchers at all times. With advances in sciences and development of newer drugs very frequently, it is very important to keep your knowledge updated at all times. This title is a quick guide to researchers and clinicians for a quick reference. The title is also a vital resource for all streams of neurosciences (neuroanesthesia and neurointensive care) and is much different from a conventional pharmacology titles, being more reader friendly and to the point facilitated with numerous flowcharts and algorithms with each chapter being prepared in a standard structured manner.

"Perioperative Neurosciences: Translational Research examines current clinical research focused on complications and the improvement of patient outcomes in neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care. The book addresses important translational topics including neuroanesthetics, pharmacogenomics, neuroprotection and neurotoxicity. In addition, it covers special considerations for topics such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and pain, as well as for specific patient populations like geriatric and pediatric."--

This book presents a student-centric, problem-based approach to learning key issues in neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care, a concept that is gaining popularity and acceptance in the medical education field. Each chapter starts with a brief case scenario describing the condition, followed by series of questions and answers covering important aspects like differential diagnosis, associated co-morbidity, preoperative evaluation and preparation, intraoperative anesthetic management, postoperative management and prognosis. Featuring questions to engage readers, and providing answers based on reason and supported by evidence and references, the book is a valuable educational aid for trainees and residents. It also offers insights into the real-world clinical situations, making it of interest to practicing anesthesiologists and neuroanesthesiologists.
