Le 14 décembre 1709, Françoise d’Aubigné, marquise de Maintenon (1635-1719), épouse de Louis XIV, ajoutait à son testament un codicille par lequel elle léguait ses « petits livres secrets » à Catherine Travers du Pérou (1666-1748), supérieure de la maison royale de Saint-Louis à Saint-Cyr. Auparavant, ces cahiers n’avaient jamais servi qu’à des usages privés : pendant des années, puisant à plusieurs sources, Madame de Maintenon y avait copié de sa main des lettres spirituelles ou des extraits de textes plus longs, façonnant progressivement une sorte d’anthologie personnelle, puisée à plusieurs sources. Ce volume propose la première édition des neuf « petits livres » subsistants, complétée par trois textes également copiés de la main de Madame de Maintenon. Considérés ensemble, ces écrits témoignent de différents niveaux d’action, allant de la reproduction à la création, du domaine spirituel à l’éducation. Ils jettent un éclairage inédit sur la pratique dévotionnelle de Madame de Maintenon, montrant comment elle accommodait les conseils que lui prodiguaient des figures masculines (principalement Paul Godet des Marais) de l’autorité religieuse. --

Privacy is often viewed as a modern phenomenon. Early Modern Privacy: Sources and Approaches challenges this view. This collection examines instances, experiences, and spaces of early modern privacy, and opens new avenues to understanding the structures and dynamics that shape early modern societies. Scholars of architectural history, art history, church history, economic history, gender history, history of law, history of literature, history of medicine, history of science, and social history detail how privacy and the private manifest within a wide array of sources, discourses, practices, and spatial programmes. In doing so, they tackle the methodological challenges of early modern privacy, in all its rich, historical specificity. Grand, extravagant, magnificent, scandalous, corrupt, political, personal, fractious; these are terms often associated with the medieval and early modern courts. Moreover, the court constituted a forceful nexus in the social world, which was central to the legitimacy and authority of rulership. As such, courts shaped European politics and culture: architecture, art, fashion, patronage, and cultural exchanges were integral to the spectacle of European courts. Researchers have convincingly emphasised the public nature of courtly events, procedures, and ceremonies. Nevertheless, court life also involved pockets of privacy, which have yet to be systematically addressed. This edited collection addresses this lacuna and offers interpretations that urge us to reassesses the public nature of European courts. Thus, the proposed publication will fertilise the grounds for a discussion of the past and future of court studies. Indeed, the contributions make us reconsider present-day understandings of privacy as a stable and uncontestable notion.
