Abstract

In the global arena, African artists have contributed significantly to the inventiveness and creative vitality of the contemporary art world. This impact has been more immediate and pronounced for Western audiences as African artists move into the growing and significant diaspora in America and Europe. *Ethiopian Passages: Contemporary Art from the Diaspora* introduces the arts of the African diaspora and explores the important histories of migration and the myriad negotiations of artistic, cultural, group and personal identities among African artists in the diaspora.
Perhaps more than any other group of African peoples in the last part of the 20th century, Ethiopians embarked on journeys, both near and far, fleeing intolerable circumstances at home and often joining a network of family and friends in other parts of the globe.
*Ethiopian Passages* sketches, in broad strokes, the complexities, diversity and vibrancy of artistic practices among artists of Ethiopian descent at work today. In doing so, it brings together 10 artists, from across several generations, who have addressed issues of identity, experienced displacement and created new senses of home. Their creative approaches, chosen media, artistic narratives and personal histories are eclectic, but they all share an attachment to Ethiopia. The evidence of these encounters and personal experiences traced subtly across the surfaces of the works of art attests to the magnificence of contemporary African art and its arresting power.

Abstract

"Caravans of Gold, Fragments in Time" draws on the latest archaeological discoveries and art historical research to construct a compelling look at medieval trans-Saharan exchange and its legacy. Contributors from diverse disciplines present case studies that form a rich portrayal of a distant time. Topics include descriptions of key medieval cities around the Sahara; networks of exchange that contributed to the circulation of gold, copper, and ivory and their associated art forms; and medieval glass bead production in West Africa's forest region. Featuring a wealth of color images, this fascinating book demonstrates how the rootedness of place, culture, and tradition is closely tied to the circulation of people, objects, and ideas. These "fragments in time" offer irrefutable evidence of the key role that Africa played in medieval history and promote a new understanding of the past and the present.
