Cet ouvrage compare l'expérience de la gestion de l'environnement dans cinq pays asiatiques dont les performances économiques sont remarquables : le Japon, la Corée, Taiwan, la Thaïlande et l'Indonésie. La rapidité de la croissance économique a lourdement pesé sur l'environnement, mais les gouvernements de ces pays se sont employés avec un certain succès à limiter les dommages écologiques grâce à une combinaison d'investissements publics, de réglementations et de sanctions administratives. Cependant, la pollution automobile et les déchets dangereux continuent à poser de graves problèmes.
