Abstract

This edited volume offers a fresh look into the history of the League of Nations. It uses the League of Nations' involvement in social issues as a unique prism for understanding the League's development, as well as the development of interwar international relations more generally. Off the beaten path of diplomatic history, this perspective allows the authors to trace less familiar actors and unexpected alliances. It enables contributors to reassess the League's impact on European societies, their colonial possessions, and non-European states. As such, it also marks a paradigm shift in the League's Eurocentric historiography toward one that acknowledges its global reach.

Abstract

Over the past decades, the world has seen a dramatic increase in inequality. To what extent have the rules that govern the global economy, formally or informally, affected this trend? How can global governance arrangements be reformed to counteract them?In this book, an interdisciplinary group of prominent scholars scrutinizes how the rules of global economic governance-or the lack thereof-determine the extent and growth of inequality. Economists, political scientists, lawyers, and other experienced contributors bring together cutting-edge research on global rule making and inequality, exploring how international rules can exacerbate inequalities among and within countries to show the crucial interactions between policy choices and the distribution of income and wealth. They provide an in-depth examination of the rules governing foreign-investment protection, cross-border financial flows, and intellectual property rights, as well as the lack of standards governing international taxation and the channels through which they might affect inequality. With a focus on ambitious and achievable reforms, this book offers concrete steps toward global economic governance capable of counteracting inequitable wealth distribution and bringing about fairer economic growth.

Abstract

While the international community has made a commitment to achieve full employment and decent work for all, this goal seems ever more distant in view of recent trends such as growing unemployment and underemployment, the phenomenon of 'jobless growth', the increasing 'casualization' of employment relations, the promotion of labour flexibility at the expense of welfare security, de-industrialization and the continued decline of peasant agriculture.Revisiting some familiar terrain with new lenses, this ground-breaking book seeks fresh solutions. Employment creation is seen as the key link in ensuring that economic growth contributes to poverty reduction, with management of technological change playing a crucial role. While the trend towards greater labour flexibility seems irresistible, recent experience provides some options for also ensuring decent work and economic security. This book illustrates how alternative macroeconomic policy priorities can alleviate the employment problems exacerbated by financial liberalization. It explores new approaches to social security, the informal economy, the welfare state and rural employment in Africa.
