Abstract

"This book is designed to be of interest to many different audiences due to its cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary content. It will appeal to those within architectural higher education as well as to spatial practitioners, students, civic and governmental organizations engaged in socio-spatial projects. The book is (1) an academic source of critical and practice-driven knowledge on experiential architectural design learning (2) provides methods for other ways of learning in the form of design-build and live projects and (3) offers design inspiration for community-engaged spatial practices relevant to both educators and practising architects and designers"--

Abstract

Public displays, i.e., interactive screens situated in (semi-)public spaces, have the potential to reveal locally relevant information to passers-by, without the need to own or log-into any personal device. They present an opportunity for citizens to engage socially around this information as they stand in contrast to the individual cocoons that smartphones tend to create. However, designing such civic public displays involves tackling key challenges that impact their potential to deliver insight and spark social interaction. Which information is valuable to convey, using which interaction modality and type of screen, and in which physical context? In contrast to most data use in smart cities, this dissertation investigates these challenges specifically for the use of public displays to facilitate engagement with data on a human scale.By designing and building five distinct, working prototypes, we gain insight into the impact of different factors of their design. These prototypes were tested by real users in railway, sports and urban design contexts over increasing periods of time. With the resulting insights, we aim to bring public displays closer to fulfilling their unique potential in civic engagement actions.

Abstract

This research involved a long-term participatory study embedded in the Solidary Mobile Housing (SMH) project, a Living Lab aimed at developing, testing, and refining a model and prototype for the co-creation of solidary living in mobile homes on un(der)used urban spaces in the Brussels-Capital Region. The aim of this PhD was to extend the knowledge contributions of the practice-oriented SMH project with a deeper study on how the co-creation of temporary housing on urban waiting spaces, for and with homeless people and civil society organisations, can contribute to socio-spatial resilience. Moreover, the PhD also aimed to understand the consequences of this for urbanism and architectural design. In order to address these aims and questions, in this PhD, we have interwoven Participatory Action Research in the SMH Living Lab with a theoretical and case study review and a Critical Reflection on the SMH methods, experiences, and outcomes. In this PhD, temporary use of waiting spaces for housing is put forward as a small step towards, in the short-term, rapidly providing more affordable housing for the most vulnerable citizens. Moreover, this PhD also identifies a long-term perspective, focusing on adopting a more ‘transitional’ approach to the city, and leading to the transformation of the Brussels housing system to include more solidary and inclusive modes of housing production. The outcomes of this study further include solid policy recommendations for operationalising transitional use of waiting spaces for housing. In conclusion, the PhD culminated in the formulation of a future perspective for increasing socio-spatial resilience through the solidary appropriation of urban waiting spaces and Networked Critical Spatial Practices, which we called ‘the Futuring Stack’.

Abstract

The project concentrated on post-industrial areas along the canal of Brussels. The aim is to rethink those sites by providing strong infrastructural network all along the water. After series of analyses, the site of Biestebroeck was chosen to be a starting point for Canal revitalization. The area is situated in the great proximity to the city centre and to Midi station. Biestebroeck itself is an industrial area that does not fully function anymore. It became huge waiting space and remains in the state as we see for almost a decade. The aim of the project is to keep the identity of the area, but fulfil it with facilities that answer the needs of society today. By implementing wooden movable structures we creating unusual space combinations for super-diverse population of Biestebroeck.

Abstract

From the initial background in correlation with the research it was obvious that massive developments in tension areas do not deliver appropriate outcome. More so, it was elaborated the gap between the population and development plans. Therefore, tackling the construction sites as direct remotes that would enable influence over the future developments, appeared as initial hypothesis. Additionally, the research indicated through additional reasons that encouraged this hypothesis. From the considered analysis it was obvious that construction sites areas. In this manner, testing this kind of technique for handling the construction sites may improve their conduction and social interaction. In this point of view, construction can be turned into source of advantages and create spaces socially and economically adoptable by the contexts. However, this research promotes trend that go along with the importance of the public domain. Major private properties should step of land to the public as act of a social investment, which will inspire spatial quality and economical value. Nevertheless, the research exploration and the promoted specific design process revealed few pragmatic problems and economical issues that may evolve after acquiring a lot and launching a project: - Problem with finding appropriate program - Risk of not having popular building - Loss of finances while the construction site is being under construction or in a waiting phase - The site is losing its value and is becoming neglected by the locals - Surrounding commercial activities and businesses may leave the site and influence the real estate prize - Obstructions to the area and potential of finesPage 108 The promoted construction and design technique deals with these problems. - The program can be generated by the local needs - The building will be accepted by the local population - Generation of means while the construction process lasts - The site is becoming attractive for new users and variety target groups - The site gives pleasant impression in the visitors memory - Surrounding business can enhance their profit and invest in the area - Flow of the mobile and pedestrian traffic - Construction of vertical communication in the early stages, regardless of the major constructions which can enable actability to different floors disregarding the finishing process of the whole building. - Easy management with the installations and ventilation. All of these advantages can contribute for the good of different parties: investors, authorities and locals. These type of development may be dominantly important to arise in vulnerable areas and societies with multi-diverse contexts. Areas where people do not have great authority and capital power as a certain social class the participation remains the only tool that can bring them influence and importance. Such areas in Brussels, are also known as “the poor croissant around Brussels”: Forrest, Saint Gilles, Anderlecht, Molenbeek, Saint Josse, Schaerbeek. These municipalities are in constant tension and under certain developments. Engaging the local citizens from these municipalities may result with achieving better communication and interaction between citizens, authorities and development plans on different levels.

Abstract

The Brussels capital region has undergone tremendous urban development over the years. In this transformation process, there are always two ends to a stick. On the one hand, there is a rapid development in a limited amount of space. On the other hand, ‘spillover’ territories of these larger development sites are formed. Over time these spillover spaces become part of the urban fabric as vacant spaces that are anticipating for a new user or to assume a new function. Essentially, they are in a period of waiting. Brussels is composed of many such urban voids that lose their function for a temporary period. These vacant lands were referred to as ‘Waiting Spaces’ (De Smet, 2013). The dissertation questions the potential of these vacant spaces to become a place of solidarity that can bring together diverse sets of communities and create a new sense of place in them. It questions, how can Place-based Solidarity be used for rethinking the way we design for Temporality of waiting spaces? How can the solidary appropriation of waiting spaces enable urban resilience? What are the potentials of engaging informality in architecture and bottom-up appropriations? The research focuses on the main key concepts of; Waiting spaces, Place-based solidarity, Informality, Urban resilience and Participation. To obtain a clearer understanding of these concepts, a literature review is conducted through surveying a range of different sources which enabled to understand the key concepts being explored and propose a suitable theoretical framework. Analysis of a selected set of case studies, gave the possibility to understand the different ways in which they have been implemented architecturally. The chosen case studies emerge from different cultural backgrounds and personal experiences. Through place-based solidarity and commons, architecture becomes a resource for solidarity. The design aims to address this in the urban and architectural scale. In the urban scale, it proposes an informal solidarity network for temporary use for waiting spaces in Brussels. It elaborates on how this could be managed and implemented, whilst making connections with the regional development plan for Brussels. In the architectural scale, spatialising solidarity has been explored through interventions that stimulate interactions between culturally diverse communities, on a particular waiting space in Brussels. The research concludes with a summary of the key points, the practices which permitted to achieve the objectives and the importance of this research in this day and age.
