Qu'est-ce qu'un récit ? Quelle est son organisation interne ? Quels sont les liens entre ce qui est raconté - l'histoire - et la manière dont cela est raconté - la narration ? Toutes ces questions et bien d'autres encore sont au centre de l'analyse formelle du récit, et notamment de ses développements contemporains connus sous la dénomination de « narratologie ». Cet ouvrage collectif, par le biais d'un regard à la fois soutenu et varié de la métalepse, montre que loin d'être dépassée ou de n'être plus qu'un outil mécanique d'analyse, la narratologie ne cesse de se complexifier, de se diversifier. Aujourd'hui, elle privilégie une démarche transdisciplinaire ainsi qu'une réflexion qui confronte le récit à d'autres phénomènes artistiques et, plus largement, représentationnels. Qu'est-ce donc qu'une métalepse ? Pour comprendre ce que cette notion désigne en narratologie, il faut rappeler que le récit se divise en deux niveaux distincts : le monde du narré et le monde de la narration. Mais ces niveaux - non spécifiques au seul récit, mais définitoires de la représentation comme telle - ne sont pas inviolables, se prêtant à des contaminations parfois surprenantes, Or, c'est cette contamination de niveaux qu'on désigne, à la suite de Gérard Genette, du terme de « métalepse ». Au delà d'une classification formelle des différents types de métalepse, ces contributions identifient les principales voies d'imbrication de ce procédé, avec ses conséquences multiples, au sein de la représentation. Toutes se consacrent de manière plus ou moins prononcée et sous différents angles - littérature, cinéma, peinture... -, aux problèmes de la figure ou de la réflexivité, de la communication ou de la représentation. Plus qu'une simple mise au point concernant une notion, plus aussi qu'un reflet de l'état actuel des réflexions dans le domaine, le recueil explore ainsi l'étendue d'un processus représentationnel paradoxal. La diversité de ses incarnations et de ses fonctions nous éclaire sur une des facettes de la puissance d'exploration de l'art.

Theorizing Narrativity is a collective work by an international array of leading specialists in narrative theory. It provides new perspectives on the nature of narrative, genre theory, narrative semiotics and communication theory. Most contributions center on the specificity of literary fiction, but each chapter investigates a different dimension of narrativity with many issues dealt with in innovative ways (including oral storytelling, the law, video games, causality, intertextuality and the theory of reading). Each entry examines the use of a specific narrative device in one or two national literatures across the ages, whether in successive or distant periods of time.
