Within the lifetime of some of our children the world's population may be expected to reach 4,000 millions. How are these millions to be fed ? This book begins with an historical study of the long controversy on the relation between a human community and its food resources, and goes on to deal with : soil conservation ; the protection of growing crops from disease ; the part played by the plant breeder in producing highyielding strains of edible crops and in converting non-edible plants into sources of human food ; the problem of waste and possible methods of utilizing waste vegetation. Each of the essays is written by an expert, and though all the authors treat in some measure of the world outlook they write in terms familiar to the English reader. The book ends with an essay on man's ingenuity in preparing and conserving the possible sources of food.
