Abstract

Slovenian architect Maruša Zorec has worked independently since 1992. Perhaps best known for her renovations of historical buildings, which she subtly transforms with bold new additions, her activities range from urban interventions to set designs, and from researching Slovenian architecture of the 1960s and ’70s to writing. She strives to discover different layers of space, but her highest admiration is reserved for voids and nature. This edition features nine works situated between 2004 and 2019, including the Ravne Library, a musical school and museum in Ormož, the college for catering and tourism in Maribor, Švicarija Art Centre in Ljubljana, and Castle Grad.

Abstract

Although Portuguese architect Souto de Moura started small, focusing at the outset of his own practice in the 1980's on residential houses and renovations, today he is one of the world's most acclaimed architects. Upon gaining wider recognition in 2000, his projects started to vary considerably in both scale and expression. Despite the diversity of his work, which broadly entails bold reinterpretations of local styles, his buildings distinguish themselves by clearly communicating the way in which they are developed as structures, rather than images or concepts. The fourth issue of 'Archives' features nine of Souto de Moura's most recent projects while paying tribute to his masterful approach.

Abstract

Founded by Salvador Macias and Magui Peredo in 2013 in Mexican Guadalajara, the land of artisans, they were later joined by their partner Diego Quirarte. The firm questions the role of craft trade and its sustainable possibilities in contemporary architecture. A fundamental part of their approach is creating the conditions to allow for experimentation and improvisation in craft trades.

Abstract

Solano Benítez founded Gabinete de Arquitectura in 1987, which Gloria Cabral joined as partner in 2004. The studio uses knowledge drawn from Paraguayan craftsmanship to create and construct buildings of vernacular materials such as brick and tile. This special expertise has become a source of innovation in much of the architects’ work. By focusing on sustainability and respect for the environment across a range of projects of various scales, they engage with both the surroundings and material recycling in their unique approach to problem solving.Nine works from 1998 to the present are featured, along with an interview with Gloria Cabral by Peter Zumthor.

Abstract

The architecture of Manuel Gallego cannot be formally assigned to any form of fashion, nor does it have an identification, a stamp, or signature that distinguishes it from other authors. […] Professor of urban planning for almost all of his teaching life, he has a very clear and committed territorial vision, but at the same time his work is recognised by the details. He his the master of all the scales. […] All of Manuel’s work is in Gallicia. In one way or another, he has worked in the city and the countryside and of course in the diffuse territories that constitute a good part of Galicia.

Abstract

The book displays the work of seven photographers and fifty five projects of architecture, presenting the problem through the unfinished constructions strewn across different points of Spain ́s geography, as well as five critic essays and eleven interviews with prestigious professors from the international academia. The dictionary definition of “unfinished” presents the following synonyms: unadorned, crude, formless, imperfect, raw, rough, under construction, unfashioned, unperfected, unpolished, unrefined. All of these adjectives conjure in the imagination of designers a new type of architectural intervention that perceives the existing built environment as a constraint upon which we can leave an important but impermanent mark. In this way, architects become a link in the chain of a structure’s life. Through the concept of the “unfinished,” we may understand the desirability of a perpetual state of evolution of the architectures that define our societies. The architecture of the unfinished leaves open a door to the unexpected, and to ideas and interventions of the future – many of which we may not yet be aware.
