"Informed by and against the backdrop of the 2019 European Parliament (EP) elections, this innovative book provides a critical assessment of where Europe stands in terms of the quest for achieving democratic legitimacy. Since the 2014 EP elections, the European Union (EU) has experienced multiple crises, which have arguably undermined its legitimacy. The 2019 EP elections were hence seen as a crucial moment in the EU's efforts to show resilience and regain trust. Using political science and legal frames of analysis, the book provides an understanding and assessment of the current politico-legal framework, and its impact on European elections. Furthermore, using original data, it provides a timely examination of public opinion issue priorities and voting behaviour at the 2019 EP elections in eight countries. Given the critical conjuncture that the 2019 EP elections represent, this volume provides a key contribution to understand both the dynamics surrounding the elections as well as voters' responses, and informs debates in European politics - for example, second-order elections, democratic legitimacy and political representation. International Relations are important components of Political Science studies, as a guide for understanding state and organizations’ behaviour, which is especially important when it comes to deal with components whose intentions are difficult to decipher. International organizations as the United Nations or the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation establish clear definitions over their range of influence and purposes. However, other organizations follow a different path, with unclear attentions, especially towards their range of influence. As such, most Western organizations do charter the importance of democracy in current regimes, a concept not shared by everyone. Therefore, this research focuses on a possible perception of partisans and opponents of democracy within those international organizations in Central Asia. This region is at the intersection of Europe and Asia, with still the prominent influence of Russia. This study emphasises on organizations like the OSCE, CIS, and SCO to address this question through a mix of document analysis and quantitative data to perceive their tactics to embrace or repress democracy. This thesis concludes that, despite the CIS and SCO being against this type of regime, their focus is firstly on strengthening their influence rather than repulsing the wave of democratization, while OSCE’s efforts to promote it are not enough to shift the region
