Within the memory of many who are still living, the United States has changed from a predominantly rural to a predominantly urban nation. And the drift to the city is continuing. Nevertheless, Americans are as dependent on their land as ever-land for food and fiber, for living and working space, for outdoor recreation, and for many other essential goods and services. Land and its uses present a wide range of problems that concern every citizen : farm price support programs, acquisition and management of land for recreation, wilderness preservation, conversion of land from rural to urban uses.In this book, designed for college students and general readers, Marion Clawson draws upon many years of his own research and that of colleagues at Resources for the Future to present a compact, non-technical account of the nation's land and ist many uses. He considers past history, present trends, and future possibilities. There are separate chapters on the three great traditional uses of land for farming, grazing, and forestry, and on the two that present the greatest number of new problems : urbanization and outdoor recreation.
