En évoquant la Bible dans les dix-sept grandes œuvres qui constituent le cœur de la collection du Musée National Message Biblique, Marc Chagall n'entendait pas faire œuvre de prosélytisme religieux. Il souhaitait que le message de fraternité porté par les textes de l'Ancien Testament puisse être traduit en images et soit rendu ainsi plus universel. Le musée, ouvert en 1973, et dont la conception par l'architecte André Hermant a été pensée en collaboration avec l'artiste, sert cette ambition. Mais sa visite constitue aussi une peinture : comment conserver son sens à fart ? C'est la question que pose implicitement Chagall, et à laquelle il répond.
