Deze bundel is het resultaat van een bijzondere samenwerking van onderzoekers van het onderzoekscentrum UCERF (Utrecht Centre for European Research into Family Law). In een veranderende samenleving staat de rol van de staat, de familie en het individu regelmatig ter discussie. Wat is een taak voor burgers zelf, en wat voor hun familie? Hoe kan in het recht de balans tussen autonomie en bescherming worden gevonden, juist waar het families en kinderen betreft? Het gaat om prangende onderwerpen, zoals de wijze waarop in uiteenlopende rechtsgebieden met mantelzorg en zorg voor ouderen wordt omgegaan. Maar ook om de aan belang winnende participatie en autonomie van minderjarigen in familie- en jeugdrechtzaken, en hoe het relatierecht de doelen die het heeft beter kan dienen, in het licht van ongehuwd en religieuze huwelijken.
