Dr Dudley Stamp's book Our Undeveloped World was published in 1953. When a new edition was demanded it was quickly realized that so rapid have been developments all over the world, and in so many directions, that an entirely new book was called for, and Dr Stamp has now written this new book. Its title, Our Developing World, is fully justified. Against a background of ever-increasing population pressure on land and land resources, in a world where knowledge and practice of death control have overtaken knowledge and practice of birth control, the stupendous changes of the new agricultural revolution are reviewed. The mechanization, and still more recently the chemicalization, of agriculture, combined with the work of plant and animal geniticists, are producing results undreamed of a few years ago. The future prospect is exciting yet confusing : if present trends continue "standing room only" is within measurable distance, but at the moment technical progress is holding its own in increasing food supply more rapidly still. From being the occupation of four-fifths of mankind, farming is fast becoming a highly specialized industry, with repercussions upon the structure of society yet ungauged. Greater intensity of land use in some regions is at present heightening rather than diminishing the contrasts with less developed lands ; inequalities between groups of human beings are increasing. This book makes no attempt to give the answers to the many problems raised, but appeals for some fresh thinking.
