De geschiedenis van de wiskunde is niet altijd volgens een geleidelijk opgaande lijn gegaan. Via beschavingen uit de oudheid kwam ze tot een eerste bloeiperiode bij de Grieken, die met name de meetkunde van een streng logische opbouw voorzagen. Ondanks het werk van de Arabieren zou het tot na de Middeleeuwen duren voordat daaraan nieuwe theorieën werden toegevoegd. n de 19e eeuw ontstand een nieuwe bloeiperiode, die tot heden voortduurt.
