The poetic masterwork of the great nineteenth-century writer Charles Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal is one of the most frequently read and studied works in the French language. It has broad appeal among general readers of French literature and is often included in both introductory courses and more intensive upper-level and graduate seminars. Baudelaire's masterpiece is also the focus of a great amount of impressive and theoretically wide-ranging scholarly analysis. Yet, surprisingly, there are few book-length studies available that approach the poems in Baudelaire's collection on an individual basis. Understanding "Les Fleurs du Mal" fills this gap by providing students and serious readers with clear, scholarly "explications" to many of the most widely read of Baudelaire's poems. Each of the sixteen essays in this volume begins with the original French poem itself, followed by a close interpretive reading. All of the essays are well-written and hold genuine interest. Many of the most current and useful of critical approaches are represented, as in the case of Maclean's use of structural analysis, Olmstead's socio-aesthetic reflections on gender and misogyny, Miner's focus on intertextual and thematic considerations of the nature of poetic inspiration, Mahuzier's intertextual "Proustian" reading, and Chambers's focus on the historical and political conditioning of poetic expression. Many of the readings in the collection also introduce other related poems from Les Fleurs du Mal. This book should be welcomed by a large and diverse audience, from scholars, teachers, and students of French literature in general to specialists in nineteenth-century French poetry.
