Tibullus (ca. 54 - 19 v.Chr.) stierf jong, met achterlating van een klein oeuvre liefdespoëzie, gericht aan jongens en vrouwen. In de burgeroorlog die losbarstte na de moord op Julius Caesar verloor zijn familie haar landerijen. Deze ervaring maakte van Tibullus een Romeinse variant van een poète maudit, een man die hunkert naar de grote liefde, veiligheid en stabiliteit. Tegelijk is hij bitter, tegendraads en spotziek. 0Soepel zwenkt Tibullus in zijn poëzie van intense liefdeslyriek naar een even intense afkeer van de jacht op status en geld. Volgens Tibullus is de rijkdom van de één gestolen van de ander of het gevolg van roofbouw op de natuur. Zijn alternatief is een leven van ?net genoeg? op het platteland, dat staat voor echte rijkdom: liefde, vrijheid en scheppend vermogen. Het boerenland is bij Tibullus een wereld van liefde en rituelen. Het heeft de tijdloosheid van het mythische verleden, toen de goden nog op aarde leefden. Op het ritme van de seizoenen vindt Eros er zijn weg, ?s zomers in afgelegen valleien, ?s winters voor een laaiend haardvuur.
