In this book the authors investigate how iconology as a field and method, which originated within art history, relates to recent developments in the Humanities such as Anthropology and Visual Studies. The main questions are: How has iconology evolved in the past decennia, could it incorporate Anthropology and Visual Studies towards a new science of images? How have new disciplines profited from iconology and how can they in turn inspire and/or reinvent iconology? These questions are addressed within a wide historical and geographical scope, as we regard the tracing of pictorial meaning throughout time and space an essential characteristic of iconology. The selected specialists of this volume all have a specific involvement with the new tendencies in iconology today. The authors share their lectures, ideas, methods, old and current research for one common goal: the further study and exploration of the making, the meaning and the migration of images in art history.

Dominique Stroobant (°1947, Antwerp) is a Belgian artist living and working in Italy. Stroobant started his career carving stones and experimenting with lithophones. Together with painter Jef Verheyen he conceived marble works from the seventies, which he continues to this date. From the seventies onwards, Stroobant also became interested in the medium film and subsequently created cameras and recorders of various shapes and sizes. Throughout his early career, the artist recorded anti-authoritarian movements and victim memorials. Stroobant is particularly puzzled by the shapes of things that hint at infinity.

As part of the city-wide Antwerp Baroque 2018 festival, artist Jan Fabre has been invited to create three new altarpieces for Antwerps St Augustines Church, now the home of the international cultural and music centre AMUZ. In fulfilling this prestigious commission Fabre is following in the illustrious footsteps of Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and Anthony van Dyck, who were asked to produce an altarpiece each in 1628. This handsomely illustrated book brings to life the origin, history and richness of these works of art in all their subtlety. Fabres extraordinary triptych, The Monastic Performance, The Mystic Contract and The Ecstatic Recording is truly breathtaking. Specially conceived, the works form an apotheosis of core elements from his oeuvre, including the lamb, fire, woman, spirituality, and his love of Antwerp, represented by the diamond motif. In this sumptuous Mercatorfonds publication, Barbara De Coninck, Joanna De Vos, Jenke Van den Akkerveken and Els Wuyts take an investigative trip through the iconography and meaning of the individual altarpieces. Starting from Fabres preparatory collage drawings we follow the construction and metamorphosis of the mosaics. Paul Huvennes connective essay makes a detailed comparison between Fabres contemporary interpretations and the Baroque originals, with reference to the particular history of St Augustines Church. And Joost Vander Auwera discovers surprising parallels between Fabre, Jordaens and Van Dyck.
