Abstract

Hilde Overbergh (°1964, BE) is a Belgian artist, mainly known for her paintings and painterly installations. When she was 19 years old, standing on the corner of Bryant street and 15th street in San Francisco, she took a view on The Vats, an abandoned building in complete decay and a rehearsal space and crash pad to the local punk scene. The energy intrigued her. All this destruction and freedom was there for her to feed upon and to develop her artistic career. In her early large-scale paintings, she already included discarded and found materials from dumpsters and construction-sites. As her work developed the play with painting, objects and space became more apparent. Today Overbergh creates a world where paint, color and installations tell us stories about relations, construction and deconstruction. Actions such as folding, cutting, attaching and arranging give structure to her observations and act as inspiration and working method. She creates a tangible reality that lies in painting itself and in her choice of materials. The artist explores the formal aspects beyond the boundaries of the frame. In creating her artworks, she embraces the beauty in the useless materials that she collects during her travels and residencies to various places around the world like the USA, Iran, Portugal and Berlin. Other sources of inspiration are registrations of trivial constructions and situations her gaze falls upon. Spilled Milk will present the first comprehensive selection of work from the past eight years. Richly illustrated and with essays focusing on specific aspects, Spilled Milk will give an inside view on the artist's wide range of working strategies.

Abstract

In her bold and colorful paintings, Joëlle Dubois (b. 1990; lives and works in Ghent) examines the impact of social media and the role of humans in our modern society. Inspired by the constant stream of photos and video clips of the Internet, she confronts the viewer with explicit scenes of private life. By means of playful improvised compositions, Dubois captures both the surfeit and the transient nature of the images. In her figurative paintings on wooden panels, she deals with topics such as gender, sexuality and fetishism. In a mixture of lethargy, obsession and sadness, Dubois shows her characters in compromising and intimate positions and thus pointedly captures today's hectic, confused Zeitgeist

Abstract

Sarajevo to Paris, fashion or reportage, deciding on the title of a book is mind-boggling. I call myself a documentary photographer that accidentally ended up doing fashion. The end of the '80s was an interesting and intense time in world history, and a particularly creative time in the world of fashion. As a young female photographer I was interested in both worlds. I was travelling for newspapers and magazines to the fashion weeks in Milan and Paris and to the conflict zones of Lebanon and Iraq. It was during the war in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the siege of Sarajevo that I matured in documentary photography, fortunately without being injured. Thirty years later, when looking back, those two worlds — documentary and fashion — still define my work. Both are equally represented in my archives. This book, of my fashion work, is the first to be published. I called it Sarajevo to Paris because sometimes I would travel directly from one to the other. These two cities had a big impact on my life.

Abstract

The more I reflect on her work, the more it appears to me as a peculiar form of Land Art?, is how art historian Ory Dessau describes the art practice of Marie Cloquet. The artist put together an extensive archive of photographs and uses it time and again to create her monumental landscapes on canvas. She considers the images, both digital and analog, as sketches and sees similarities between her process and that of classical painters. Close to the way in which, for example, the Flemish masters arranged the sketches they made on site, once back in their studios, into new, realistic looking compositions, Cloquet cuts up and mixes her images into independent entities that remain only loosely connected with the real world. After manipulating the photos in the darkroom, she prints them on drawing paper, tears them up and reconstructs them collage-wise, using watercolor paint. The rugged, anonymous worlds that emerge, play with scale, size and perspectives and simultaneously appeal, as places of devastation, to our collective memory. Marie Cloquet says, that at his core, her work is about collateral damage. If initially her pictures, mainly because of the analog production method, remained confined to the black and white spectrum, the artist has recently begun to gradually introduce color in her work. Subtle, pale and sketchy, so that the works tend towards the realm of the suggestive. It is an attempt to place a gentle veil over dramatic footage, to cover confrontational facts on the current state of the world and the human condition with a layer of beauty.

Abstract

Sancho Don’t Care is Boels eerste monografie over tien jaar intensief werk. Het biedt een uitgebreid overzicht van een proces dat nog volop in ontwikkeling is.

Abstract

Gap in the Clouds is published to accompany the solo exhibition by Ricardo Brey in Museum Hof van Busleyden in Mechelen. It is his first major exhibition in Belgium after his participation in the 56th Venice Biennale. With Gap in the clouds, the artist wants to make a positive statement and give a sign of hope in these troubled times. The globally shared humanity of the pandemic and the rousing social movements for racial and gender equality have prompted Brey to create a series of introspective works that seek to weave a web between his disparate works. Colour and light are playing an important role encompassing the artist’s ongoing exploration of concepts like time, mythology, human expression, and the natural universe. In his works of this period of solitude in his studio due to the lockdowns Brey explores the colour blue as he associated this colour with the sky and the sea, symbols of expansiveness and freedom, with open spaces, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity. The book will include artist writings and a collaboration with author and poet Peter Verhelst.

Abstract

Since 1998, Jan De Vliegher has been creating large-scale paintings based on careful observations of daily life. His work is a synthesis of abstract expressionism and impressionism, or, as art critic Willem Elias likes to describe it: ‘figurative Action Painting within an abstract framework of single-subject or all-over compositions’. Although unmistakably figurative, his rough and bushy brush strokes reveal a sense of abstraction, further enforced by the baroque and atmospheric aesthetic of his tableaux. There is no intentional narrative, no political message or anecdotal reference; his art mainly resolves around the act of painting itself. De Vliegher works in a fast and obsessive manner, according to the technique of ‘alla prima’, by which the layers are painted in one sitting, while the paint is still wet, and the blending of colours happens on the canvas itself, not on a palette. He applies the paint to the canvas in one movement, from the shoulder, straight from the bucket, uninterruptedly vital — perhaps even rushed. A joyous play of light and colour splashes from his paintings. For his subject matter, De Vliegher keeps an image database of over 40.000 photographs. He often finds beauty in mundane situations and banal objects which he finds on the beach, in his garden or in shop windows, but also in ancient statues, noble interiors, precious glass, marbles, porcelain and faience, which he construes as symbols of faded glory and power. Everything is meticulously captured and sorted by theme in folders and sub-folders, after which a selection of these images is digitally edited. De Vliegher carefully manipulates composition, form, colour, and perspective and hereby eliminates anything that is anecdotal, until the specific motifs are molded into a more universal objectivity. This monograph presents the first comprehensive overview of De Vliegher’s oeuvre, accompanied by a text by curator Els Wuyts.
