Une analyse détaillée d'un corpus majeur de l'artiste allemand par Erik Verhagen, accompagnée d'un historique de la pièce établie par Thierry Davila. Présentée quasiment en continu depuis l'ouverture du MAMCO au public, l'oeuvre de Franz Erhard Walther y occupe une place singulière. Celle-ci est structurée par l'Ensemble d'oeuvres no 1 (1. Werksatz), soit 58 objets en tissu cousu et activables, dont l'impact historique est unique sur la scène de l'art depuis les années 1960. Cet ouvrage s'attache à l'étude systématique et détaillée de ce corpus à travers une ample analyse d'Erik Verhagen. Elle est complétée par un historique, rédigé par Thierry Davila, de la présentation de l'oeuvre de Franz Erhard Walther au MAMCO. Au total, cette publication est l'une des toutes premières, disponible en français, à être consacrée à une figure majeure de l'art actuel.

Jan Dibbets est né à Weert, aux Pays-Bas, en 1941. Souvent rattaché au Land Art et à l'art conceptuel, il appartient à la génération des peintres-photographes qui, à la fin des années 1960, estiment que la peinture conduit à une impasse. Ils se tournent alors vers la photographie, médium qui apparaît comme l'instrument idéal pour élargir le champ d'investigation de l'art. Il s'inscrit dans la tradition hollandaise, celle d'un Vermeer, d'un Saenredam, ou d'un Mondrian. Le paysage, le travail sur le motif, la représentation à travers la perspective, le cadrage, la notion de point de vue sont les grands axes de sa démarche. Erik Verhagen retrace, dans cette étude approfondie, quarante années de création, durant lesquelles l'artiste ne cesse d'explorer les phénomènes de perception. Première approche monographique sur l'œuvre photographique de Jan Dibbets, ce livre est édité avec le soutien de la Fondation Mondrian à Amsterdam et de la banque Neuflize Vie à Paris. How are we to understand works of art that are realized with viewers’ physical involvement? How are we to analyze a relationship between a work of art and its audience that is rooted in an experience both aesthetic and physical when "user experience" is a central concern of a society held in the grip of omnipresent interactivity? Between two seemingly opposed modes, contemplation and use, this book offers a third option: that of "practicable" works, made for and of audience action. 

Today, these works often use digital technologies, but artists have created participatory works since the mid-twentieth century. In this volume, critics, writers, and artists provide diverse perspectives on this kind of "practicable" art, discussing and documenting a wide variety of works from recent decades. *Practicable* returns to the mainstays of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present, examining artistic practices that integrate the most forward-looking technologies, disregarding the false division between artworks that are technologically mediated and those that are not. 

*Practicable* proposes a historical framework to examine art movements and tendencies that incorporate participatory strategies, drawing on the perspectives of the humanities and sciences. It investigates performance and exhibition, as well as key works by artists including Marina Abramović, Janet Cardiff, Lygia Clark, Piotr Kowalski, Robert Morris, David Rokeby, and Krzysztof Wodiczko, and features interviews with such leading artists and theoreticians as Matt Adams of Blast Theory, Claire Bishop, Nicolas Bourriaud, Thomas Hirschhorn, Bruno Latour, Seiko Mikami, and Franz Erhard Walther.
