In deze publikatie over het leven van ongehuwde vrouwen in Groot-Brittannië tussen 1850 en 1920, wordt er onder andere ingegaan op de onderwijspositie van vrouwen in deze periode. Met name over de 'vrouwencolleges', die vrouwen een zekere onafhankelijkheid konden schenken: "higher education meant the right of a large class of women to an honourable independence; it opened out another possibility of a respected and self-respecting life" en over de 'Boarding Schools' voor meisjes, waar zowel de leerlingen als de ongehuwde leraressen in een exclusief vrouwelijke gemeenschap leefden en onderwijs genoten en gaven.
