Abstract

Rose Wylie RA (b.1934) trained as an artist in the 1950s, but it was her re-engagement with painting in the early 1980s, after a period spent raising a family, that marked the beginning of a remarkable career that continues to evolve and impress. This monograph, the first of its kind, follows Wylie's fascinating artistic journey celebrating her achievements while also examining her current practice.0Rose Wylie's large-scale paintings are inspired by a wide range of visual culture. Her subject matter ranges from contemporary Egyptian Hajj wall paintings and Persian miniatures to films, news stories, celebrity gossip and her observation of daily life. Often working from memory, she distills her subjects into succinct observations, using text to give additional emphasis to her recollections. In weaving together imagery from different sources with personal elements, Wylie's paintings offer a direct and wry commentary on contemporary culture. Her pictures refuse judgment but reveal a concern with the everyday that makes visible its enigmatic core.

Abstract

Widely considered as one of the most influential British artists of his generation, Long's practice stems from his deep love of nature and the experience of making solitary walks. He first came to prominence in the late 1960s and is part of a generation of international artists that extended the possibilities of sculpture beyond traditional materials and methods. This volume includes a coherent span of over 30 essays and reviews on the artist from the late 1960s to the present, drawn together here for the first time. The texts are accompanied by a selection of the artist's own statements, key interviews, as well as an introductory essay by Clarrie Wallis that examines Long's unique position within postwar art history.

Abstract

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a unique collaboration between three of Britain’s best-known contemporary artists. Angus Fairhurst, Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas first met on the Fine Art course at Goldsmiths College, London in 1986 and have remained close, influencing each other’s work through friendship and intermittent collaboration. This is the first time the three have worked together to realise a full-scale exhibition installation. The exhibition features mainly new work which is unveiled for the first time at Tate Britain. The exhibition’s title - a mutated reference to the biblical theme of the Garden of Eden - is taken from the 1968 recording by the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly. The potent story of Eden provides the setting for an exhibition which explores the themes of life, love, sex, death and destruction. While Fairhurst, Hirst and Lucas explore common themes, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida also reveals their differing formal and material approaches and use of metaphor in creating their work.In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’s installation features a large, open space revealing a dramatic landscape populated by seemingly bizarre objects, with wallpaper conceived by each of the three artists providing the background for their work. Sarah Lucas often uses commonplace items such as pizza delivery flyers, soft drink cans and cigarettes to create unexpectedly finely-crafted objects. Among her sculptures in the exhibition is The Man Who Sold the World 2004, which features a truck whose cab is papered with tabloid newspapers and Christ You Know It Ain’t Easy 2003, a sculpture of Christ created from cigarettes and positioned against a representation of the flag of St George.Damien Hirst meanwhile makes increasingly complex installations using vitrines and has returned to the use of butterflies in recent paintings. He shows five new vitrines inIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida including The Pursuit of Oblivion 2004, Hirst’s reworking of Francis Bacon’s Painting, 1946. In Bacon’s painting the crucified body hangs like an animal carcass whereas in Hirst’s sculpture the body has literally been transformed into the carcass of a cow, surrounded by live fish, sausages and a butcher’s block and knives. He also exhibits a large, circular work in which thousands of dead flies create a thickly encrusted surface.Angus Fairhurst’s work revolves around an heightened sense of collapse, of disintegration of form and renewal. His large billboard works sandwich together a number of advertisements to create complex compositions. He also shows One Year of the News (1st January - 31st December 2003) 2004, a piece in which each day of one year is marked by the copying and overlaying of the front pages of six British national newspapers, instantly recognisable but unreadable. The exhibition is curated by Gregor Muir, Kramlich Curator of Contemporary Art, Tate and Clarrie Wallis, Curator, Tate Britain, and will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

Abstract

Mona Hatoum edited by Christine Van Assche with Clarrie Wallis is the first major survey of one of the world's most provocative and politically engaged artists. The book accompanies an exhibition at Tate Modern starting May 2016.Born in Beirut to a Palestinian family, artist Mona Hatoum came to Britain as a student in the mid-1970s, settling in London in 1975. Her art – whether video, performance, sculpture or installation – is concerned with confrontational themes including violence, oppression and voyeurism, often in reference to the human body; and with the juxtaposition of opposites such as beauty and horror, desire and revulsion.Hatoum has participated in numerous important group exhibitions including The Turner Prize and the Venice Biennale. As the winner of the Joan Miró Prize, she held a solo exhibition at undació Joan Miró in Barcelona in 2012, and the following year was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum St Gallen. In 2014 a large survey show of her work was held at the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar. With eight new essays, including an introduction by curator Clarrie Wallis, and a re-published text by renowned Orientalist scholar Edward Said, a wide range of texts cover both the theory and practice of Hatoum’s work. Beautifully designed, with 250 colour images covering the whole of Hatoum’s ouevre, this is the essential book on a distinctly powerful voice in contemporary art.

Abstract

Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Since he came to prominence in the late 1990s, Leckey's practice has addressed the radical effect of technology on popular culture and has powerfully articulated the transition from analogue to digital culture. His work is often concerned with under-represented or overlooked aspects of British culture and explores ideas about both collective and personal history. For example, the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999 uses sampled footage to trace dance subcultures in British nightclubs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dream English Kid, 1964-1999 AD 2015 focuses on key episodes in his own life, constructed from "found memories" sourced primarily from the internet. This book, accompanying Leckey's first major show at Tate, combines newly commissioned writing with artist's scripts for performances, and illustrates his previous work as well as the intriguing sources of inspiration for this powerful, immersive new exhibition.

Abstract

This major exhibition is Richard Long's first survey in London for eighteen years and is a unique opportunity to understand afresh the artist's radical rethinking of the relationship between art and landscape.Long's work comes from his love of nature and through the experience of making solitary walks. These take him through rural and remote areas in Britain, or as far afield as the plains of Canada, Mongolia and Bolivia. Long never makes significant alterations to the landscapes he passes through. Instead he marks the ground or adjusts the natural features of a place by upending stones for example, or making simple traces. He usually works in the landscape but sometimes uses natural materials in the gallery. His work explores relationships between time, distance, geography, measurement and movement.Featuring over 80 works, Heaven and Earth includes sculptures, large-scale mud wall works, and new photographic and text works documenting walks around the world, plus a big selection of the artists' books, postcards and other printed matter.

Abstract

Steve McQueen is one of the most important artists, film-makers and screenwriters working today. Over the last 25 years he has been hugely influential in expanding the way in which artists work with film. He has also authored some of the most seminal works of moving image designed for gallery-based presentation, as well as four films for cinematic release, Hunger (2008), Shame (2010), 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Widows (2018). 0This publication will bring together all the immersive video and film installations he has made since 2000. It will include large-scale video installations including Caribs' Leap/Western Deep (2002), alongside more recent films such as Ashes (2002-15), as well as the premiering new work. For those new to McQueen the book will include a brief but informative overview of his career to date, in the form of an interview between the artist and renowned critic Okwei Enwezor, together with text focusing on new works and his current practice in art and filmmaking, which will provide a unique and personal review of his output. Further essays will focus more deeply and directly on McQueen's artworks in relation to film, black cinema, queer cinema and the sociopolitical context of black British issues and within black diaspora, providing new insight and critical assessment of his work. 0The publication will also feature his forthcoming 'Year 3' project to be held at Tate Britain in late 2019 as well as a further new work yet to be announced.00Exhibition: Tate Modern, London, UK (13.02.-11.05.2020) / Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, Italy (06.-09.2020).
