Les premiers films des frères Lumière, qui durent environ une minute, montrent des scènes familiales et de vie quotidienne à Lyon; par la suite, ils présentent des images exotiques rapportées par des opérateurs des quatre coins du globe. Pendant une dizaine d'années, les vues Lumière connaissent un immense succès; elles seront imitées un peu partout dans le monde. Georges Méliès parle de la première projection cinématographique, Auguste Lumière, Louis Lumière. Edison filme des numéros de cirque pour son Kinetoscope, mais ses tentatives de mise en scène en studio tournent court. C'est Georges Méliès qui réussit le premier à intégrer la scénographie du music-hall et du théâtre de variétés à la technique cinématographique. Son "Voyage dans la lune" (1902) sera diffusé mondialement et, surtout, plagié par les autres firmes de production. La période primitive s'achève avec le passage du court métrage au long métrage. Le triomphe commercial, en 1915, de Naissance d'une nation de D.W. Griffith marque le début de l'hégémonie du film de longue durée (supérieure à 80 min). Il correspond également à la modification du rapport des forces entre production française, jusqu'alors économiquement dominante, et production américaine. C'est aussi le moment où des firmes commencent à s'installer à Hollywood, qui vont se développer très vite pendant la guerre de 1914-1918. Il y a, pour cette période, coïncidence entre histoire politique et évolution économique du cinéma, la guerre ayant précipité le déclin des cinémas européens (français, mais aussi italien et scandinave).
