Abstract

Contrary to the portrayals of Chrysostom as a theologically impaired, moralizing sophist, this book argues that his thinking is remarkably coherent when it is understood on his own terms and within his culture. Chrysostom depicts God as a teacher of philosophy who adaptably guides people toward salvation. Since the theme of divine adaptability influences every major area of Chrysostom's thought, tracing this concept provides a thorough introduction to his theology. It also explains, at least in part, several striking features of his homilies, including his supposed inconsistencies, his harsh rhetoric and apparent political naivete, his intentionally abridged and exoteric theological discussions, and his lack of allegiance to an "Antiochene school."

Abstract

The homiletic corpora of John Chrysostom and Severian of Gabala are major yet understudied sources documenting late antique Christianity. With their sermons on Genesis as focal point, the studies in this volume contribute in many ways to advancing the state of the art. S. Voicu offers a complete survey of research on Severian, including a check-list of his authentic works. S. Kim, J. Oosterhuis-den Otter and L. Sels-S. Van Pee contribute to text-critical research on Severian, P. Augustin to that of Chrysostom. Read together, the articles by R. Bishop, W. Mayer and P. Van Nuffelen offer fresh perspectives on the tensions between Chrysostom and Severian. H. Buchinger discusses what can be gleaned from their sermons about the liturgy at Constantinople. K. Papadopoulos engages with Severian’s biblical exegesis while S. Miller and P. Molinié analyse the content of some of the sermons. As a whole, the volume offers fresh insights in the writings and thought of two important late antique Christian bishops and theologians and opens up many avenues for further research.

Abstract

St. John Chrysostom was one of the most popular and influential Greek Fathers in Syrian churches. His works began to be translated into Syriac in the fifth century, after which they significantly impacted the shape of Syriac exegetical, homiletical, dogmatic, and spiritual writing. These volumes make available for the first time an edition of the Syriac text and English translation of St. John Chrysostom’s Exegetical Homilies on the Gospel of John, typically known in Syriac as Chrysostom’s Commentary on John, Homilies (Mêmrê) 1–43. The text is edited on the basis of the extant main manuscripts, from the 6th–8th centuries, in addition to excerpts preserved in various collections. Introductions to the two volumes explore the Syriac manuscript tradition, the origin and technique of the translation, its value as a witness to the Greek text, the nature of its many biblical citations, and the impact of the version on the Syriac tradition. The volumes include an orthographical index and an index of biblical citations.
