Een persoonlijke kijk op de evolutie van de fotografie sinds 1999 met aandacht voor invloed van de digitale fotografie op de maatschappij, de media, ons kijkgedrag... - Fotografierecensent Johan de Vos beschrijft de nieuwe fotografie vanuit vijftien invalshoeken. Hij doet het niet alleen als vurig fotokijker maar ook vanuit de ervaring dat foto's zich vaak diep in de hersenen nestelen en daar vreemde dingen aanrichten. Een onbevangen en persoonlijk relaas met aandacht voor de mens en emoties in de fotografie. Naast de 'museumfotografie', die nu op reuzenformaten verschijnt, wordt ook aandacht besteed aan meer 'ordinaire' foto's, al was het maar omdat ze in een zo grote hoeveelheid bestaan en ons omringen.

From 2010 to 2014, photographer Nick Hannes traveled the length and breadth of the Mediterranean shores, documenting various contemporary issues such as tourism, urbanisation and migration.While he was working on this project, the region continuously hit the headlines: crisis in Greece, the Arab Spring, boat refugees on Lampedusa, wars in Libya, Syria, and Gaza. One thing is for sure: the Mediterranean was centre stage once more.Nick Hannes' images capture the paradoxes of this region and the spirit of the time most significantly. They put things into perspective. Serious and moving in one moment, hilarious and ironic in the next.

Dit essay van Vilém Flusser (zijn meest vertaalde werk – in achttien talen, maar nog niet eerder in het Nederlands) gaat verder dan de fotografie-essays van Sontag, Benjamin en Barthes. Flussers analyse van de fotografie is een aanzet tot een nieuwe cultuurkritiek. Via het combineren van concepten uit onder meer de thermodynamica, de psychologie en de communicatieleer worden begrippen als apparaat, gewoonte, informatie, spel enz. geherdefinieerd.Flusser hanteert in dit boek een heel eigen begrippenapparaat om een aantal voor de hand liggende vragen (wat is een beeld, wat is een foto, wat is een fototoestel?) inzichtelijk te maken. Hier is een bijzondere fototheoreticus aan het woord: iemand die het nu eens niet heeft over foto's als documenten, die foto's niet bespreekt in termen van representatie of 'realisme', laat staan 'kunst', maar in termen van computatie, calculatie en projectie: een foto is een beeld van concepten. Flusser acht de uitvinding van de fotografie minstens zo belangrijk als de uitvinding van het schrift. Hij laat zien dat de uitvinding van de fotografie – het door apparaten gemaakte 'technische beeld' – een sleutelmoment in de menselijke cultuur is.

The internationally acclaimed artist Dayanita Singh often describes herself as a book artist. Singh was closely involved in the making of this exhibition catalogue, which accompanies the major touring retrospective of Singh's work, curated by Stephanie Rosenthal for the Gropius-Bau. The most comprehensive publication to date about Singh's art, it includes a series of scholarly long-form and short-form essays, full-color reproductions, and installation images. The texts situate Singh's work in relation to topics such as Indian classical music, traditions of the photographic, imaginations of the archive, choreography and economies of reproduction. Presenting every important phase in the artists oeuvre, it also enters Singh's archive to include never-before-seen early works from the 1980s, a new series of montages and the works Let's see, Museum of Chance, Museum of Shedding, I am as I am, Go Away Closer and Box 507, among others. DAYANITA SINGH (*1961) is one of the most important contemporary artists. Solo exhibitions include: MMK, Frankfurt; Hayward Gallery, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; and Art Institute of Chicago.
