Die Erstausstrahlung des US-amerikanischen Fernsehvierteilers "Holocaust" im Januar 1979 markiert einen Einschnitt in der westdeutschen Erinnerungskultur. Ausgerechnet eine populärkulturelle Darstellung bestreitet die Rede von der 'Undarstellbarkeit' des totalen Genozids an den Juden Europas sowie die anscheinende Überlegenheit schriftlicher gegenüber bildlichen Vergegenwärtigungen. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht in Lektüren ausgewählter Texte von fünf nichtjüdischen Autoren und Autorinnen deren jeweilige Repräsentationsstrategien. Neben literarischen Texten wird dabei auch Hans Jürgen Syberbergs Film "Hitler - Ein Film aus Deutschland" (1977) analysiert, der, noch vor der "Holocaust"-Serie entstanden, dennoch einen Gegenentwurf darstellt.
