Abstract

Neostoicism was one of the most important intellectual movements of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It started in the Protestant Netherlands during the revolt against Catholic Spain. Very quickly it began to influence both the theory and practice of politics in many parts of Europe. It proved to be particularly useful and appropriate to the early modern militaristic states; for, on the basis of the still generally accepted humanistic values of classical antiquity, it promoted a strong central power in the state, raised above the conflicting doctrines of the theologians. Characteristically, a great part of Neostoic writing was concerned with the nationally organized military institutions of the state. Its aim was the general improvement of social discipline and the education of the citizen to both the exercise and acceptance of bureaucracy, controlled economic life and a large army.

Abstract

If Justus Lipsius’s Politica of 1589 and its importance to the history of political thought needs no introduction, Lipsius's Monita et exempla politica (1605), conceived as a sequel to the Politica , has been overlooked time and again despite the fact that it is a unique key to understand the precise character of Lipsius's political thought. For, is his widely read political dialogue a Neostoic discourse or is it Tacitean, Machiavellian, or even anti-Machiavellian in nature? Did the work play such a pivotal role in the genesis of the modern, centrally governed nation state, as some scholars tend to believe? This book collects essays by scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds. All of them endeavour to solve this apparent deadlock in scholarly research on Lipsius’s political thought. All of them offer new and fascinating insights in the genesis and developments of the nature and impact of political discourses in Early Modern Europe.

Abstract

Abstract

In 17th-century intellectual life, the ideas of the Renaissance humanist Justus Lipsius (1547–1606) were omnipresent. The publication of his Politica in 1589 had made Lipsius’s name as an original and controversial political thinker. The sequel, the Monita et exempla politica (Admonitions), published in 1605, was meant as an illustration of Lipsius’s political thought as expounded in the Politica. Its aim was to offer concrete models of behavior for rulers against the background of Habsburg politics. Lipsius’s later political treatise also forms an indispensable key to interpret the place and function of the Politica in Lipsius’s political discourse and in early modern political thought. The Admonitions – widely read, edited and translated in the 17th and 18th centuries – show Lipsius’s pivotal role in the genesis of modern political philosophy

Abstract

The book series reflects the rich variety of Neo-Latin literature and the wide range of Neo-Latin scholarship as it is thriving today. Most importantly, Supplementa Humanistica Lovaniensia propose critical editions (with introductions, preferably with commentaries and translations) of humanistic (c. 1350-c. 1650) and post-humanistic (c. 1650-c. 1950) Latin texts. The series also offers a forum to contemporary Neo-Latin, presenting first editions of belletristic works. Furthermore, it warmly welcomes original scholarly studies on Neo-Latin texts or genres, as well as Neo-Latin tools, such as anthologies or comprehensive bibliographies. Internationally oriented, it accepts both monographs and thematically coherent volumes in English, French, German, Italian and Latin. It aims to publish at least one volume a year. Priority is given to manuscripts not exceeding 120.000 words in length. --

Abstract

"The De bibliothecis of Justus Lipsius was the first monograph on library history. It followed a long series of minor treatments in the works of the humanists, from Petrarch to Fulvio Orsini. The De bibliothecis proved to be a seminal achievement, both in redefining the scope of library history and in articulating a vision of a public, secular, research institution for the humanities. It was repeatedly reprinted and translated, plagiarized and epitomized. Through the end of the nineteenth century, scholars turned to it as the ultimate foundation for any discussion of library history. In Ancient Libraries and Renaissance Humanism, Hendrickson presents a critical edition of Lipsius's work with introductory studies, a Latin text, English translation, and a substantial historical commentary"--Provided by publisher.
