Abstract

Discover how rivalling discourses of American grand strategy reveal a fractured consensus of geopolitical identity and national security under President Obama. This conflict manifested in divergent elite visions of liberal hegemony, cooperative engagement and unilateral restraint. Georg Lo˜fflmann examines the identity conflict within the Washington foreign policy establishment, between elite insiders and outsiders, and how the 'Obama Doctrine' both confirmed a geopolitical vision of American exceptionalism and challenged established notions of US hegemony and world leadership.

Abstract

Abstract

Although many developments surrounding the Internet campaign are now considered to be standard fare, there were a number of new developments in 2016. Drawing on original research conducted by leading experts, this book attempts to cover these developments in a comprehensive fashion. How are campaigns making use of the Internet to organize and mobilize their ground game ? To communicate their message ? The book also examines how citizens made use of online sources to become informed, follow campaigns, and participate. Contributions also explore how the Internet affected developments in media reporting, both traditional and non-traditional, about the campaign. What other messages were available online, and what effects did these messages have had on citizen's attitudes and vote choice ? The book examines these questions in an attempt to summarize the 2016 online campaign.

Abstract

This book assembles six chapters by respected and emerging scholars in political science and communication to produce a first sustained look at Twitter's role in the 2016 US Presidential Election. While much attention has already been paid to Trump's use of Twitter as a phenomenon—how it helps drive news cycles, distracts attention from other matters, or levies attacks against rivals, the news media, and other critics—there has been little scholarly analysis of the impact Twitter played in the actual election. These chapters apply an impressive diversity of theoretical explanations and methodological approaches to explore how this new technology shaped an American election, and what impact it could have in the future. .

Abstract

Shortly after assuming office in January 2017, President Donald Trump accused the press of being an 'enemy of the American people'. Attacks on the media had been a hallmark of Trump's presidential campaign, but language like this ventured into dangerous territory. The author writes about why we should fear for the future of American democracy. In reminding us of Edward R. Murrow's courageous reporting on Senator Joseph McCarthy's 'red scare' theatrics in the early 1950s, and of Woodward and Bernstein's reporting during the Watergate scandal in the early 1970s, the author shows that the press has been a bulwark in the defense of democracy.

Abstract

The rise of populism is usually attributed by commentators to either incomeinequality or culture wars. We are witnessing, they argue, either the displaced angerof the 99% orthe revenge of the “deplorables” against the “liberal elite.”They are wrong. In this forensic book, Eric Protzer and Paul Summerville arguethat populism is actually a response to a profound sense that many of the world’sleading economies are unfair. They show that in meritocratic countries, such asAustralia, Canada, Portugal, and Japan, populism has not taken root. In contrast, the countries that have been hit by the worst populist upheavals — like the US,UK, France, andItaly — have low social mobility. The way to address populism is torestore the connection between contribution and reward andcraft a politics thatreclaims the reasonable grievances that drive populism while discarding its falsediagnoses and toxic “solutions.” (Provided by publisher)
