Abstract

The Pentateuch lies at the heart of the Western humanities. Yet despite nearly two centuries of scholarship, its historical origins and its literary history are still a subject of intense discussion. Critical scholarship has isolated multiple layers of tradition, inconsistent laws, and narratives that could only have originated from separate communities within ancient Israel, and were joined together at a relatively late stage by a process of splicing and editing. Recent developments in academic biblical studies, however, jeopardize the revolutionary progress that has been accomplished over the last two centuries. The past forty years of scholarship have witnessed not simply a proliferation of intellectual models, but the fragmentation of discourse within the three main research centers of Europe, Israel, and North America. Even when they employ the same terminology (redactor, author, source, exegesis), scholars often mean quite different things. Concepts taken for granted by one group of scholars (such as the existence of the Elohist source) are dismissed out of hand by other scholarly communities. In effect, independent and sometimes competing scholarly discourses have emerged in Europe, Israel, and North America. Each centers on the Pentateuch, each operates with its own set of working assumptions, and each is confident of its own claims. This volume seeks to stimulate international discussion about the Pentateuch in order to help the discipline move toward a set of shared assumptions and a common discourse. With the wide range of perspectives examined, this publication is an invaluable resource for subsequent research.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Biblical books, which were transmitted on separate scrolls in antiquity, are not necessarily identical with books in the modern sense of a coherent and self-contained compositional unit. The books of the Primary History especially constitute a larger master narrative. This raises the question of how the distribution of the text to different scrolls relates to its compositional history. Were the respective books conceived as physically separate parts of a multivolume composition (whether Pentateuch, Hexateuch, Deuteronomistic History or Enneateuch) from the outset, or are we dealing with a more complex development of originally independent compositional units that were only connected or separated by later redaction? The present volume addresses these issues with respect to the transitions between the books of Genesis/Exodus and Joshua/Judges, which have obviously developed in dependency upon each other.

Abstract

"Though the Heptateuchos is possibly the most organic attempt at poetic rewriting of the Old Testament, attributed to 'Cyprian the Gaul' by R. Peiper, the latest editor of the text in CSEL 23 (1891), we do not have a comprehensive analysis of this poem yet that can provide a clear grasp of the poem's compositional logic, show which of its biblical model's content was used, and expound the context and purpose of its versification. It is apparent that in many respects the Heptateuchos is still profoundly unknown. For this reason the UR 4377 of Catholic Theology and Religious Sciences of the University of Strasbourg, notably its ERCAM ('Équipe de recherches sur le christianisme antique et médiéval'), with its statutory members and its associate members, is engaged in the publication of a new critical edition of each of the seven books of the anonymous poem of uncertain date, the Heptateuchos, also providing an exhaustive commentary. The essays collected in this volume represent a preliminary work for the upcoming edition and commentary planned by the members of UR 4377 in Strasbourg. Above all, they show how the anonymous author was interested in safeguarding the criterion of the narratio probabilis in the poem, through probable references to Judeo-Hellenistic literature and by refining the exegetical reading of the text with references to classical and Christian poetry."--

Abstract

Abstract

"Opening the Books of Moses presents an introduction to the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. It is written for any student engaged in the scholarly study of these most central of biblical texts. The aim throughout is to examine the books with a view to illuminating the ideas, beliefs and experiences of their times. The broad overview provides a survey of the current state of Pentateuchal research and an analysis of how the texts were shaped by their time and audience. The study concludes with an analysis of key concerns in the study of the Pentateuch, notably the Torah, geography, ethnicity, the nature of Yahweh and other deities, theories of cult, treaties and oaths, and Moses himself."--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract

The destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 587 BCE is arguably the most tremendous disaster in the Hebrew Bible. How this decisive date relates to the development of the Pentateuch, however, is highly controversial. Is the trauma of Jerusalem reflected in the five books of Moses? This question is addressed from multiple perspectives in this volume. Israel Finkelstein and Lester L. Grabbe discuss the archaeological and historical data. Experts in Pentateuchal criticism from diverse international backgrounds present a rich panorama of relevant themes, including biblical historiography, contacts with Mesopotamian culture before and during the Babylonian exile, and the issue of cultic discontinuity caused by the destruction and restoration of Jerusalem's temple. -book flap
