Comment en est-on venu, dans l'Eglise latine, à distinguer, voire à opposer, « l'expérience » des spirituels et la « science » des théologiens ? L'histoire éclaire les raisons de cette tension dont témoignent maintes condamnations et mises à l'Index. Par ailleurs, réfléchir sur les caractéristiques du langage mystique à la suite de Michel de Certeau, invite à considérer l'expérience spirituelle elle-même comme un langage qui manifeste le mystère de l'homme autant que celui de Dieu. L'anthropologie et la philosophie contemporaines sont convoquées au service d'un discours sensé sur l'existence humaine.

La pensée commune peut bien associer mystique et silence, discours mystique et ineffable, il est difficile, après La Fable mystique de M. de Certeau, de s'interroger sur ces questions sans articuler mystique et langage. C'est l'objet de ce volume, fondé sur un pari herméneutique qui déplace la borne temporelle situant l'avènement de la mystique aux XVIe-XVIIe siècles, et met en confrontation Moyen Age et première modernité. Il adopte une démarche pragmatique qui privilégie une réflexion sur les langues et leur aptitude à favoriser les mécanismes d'une littérature mystique, tout en s'interrogeant sur les modalités du langage où s'exprime le discours mystique (modalité du silence, codes et langue poétiques, fable). Une série d'études en miroir clôt l'ensemble : s'y voient associés, d'une manière aussi audacieuse que fructueuse, de grands noms de la littérature mystique : Maître Eckhart et Jean de la Croix, Bonaventure et François de Sales, Bernard de Claivaux et Calvin. -- Quatrième de couverture

25 years after his death, Michel de Certeau's thesis of a correlation between the development of modernity and the history of mysticism, still remains a challenge for the study of spirituality in its quest for actual forms of spiritual experience. At the same time, the topographical approach of Certeau's historiography enables to find and to elaborate free spaces within dominating cultural practices. Therefore, a discussion with Certeau's multilayered approach of spirituality and mysticism can play a key role in today's quest for new forms of spiritual experience and conscience. Avoiding both neo-orthodox and purely subjective interpretation of spiritual life, the study of Certeau can open new perspectives for a critical spirituality in the 21st century.
