Il volume presenta una serie di contributi redatti lungo il corso degli anni per diverse occasioni concernenti il confronto e il rapporto tra le autorità dell'Impero romano, e più in generale, la società pagana, e le comunità cristiane dei primi secoli. È questo il filo rosso che, seguendo uno sviluppo prevalentemente cronologico, pur nella diversità degli argomenti, distingue i vari scritti qui presentati: sono come le tessere di un mosaico che compongono un quadro variegato. Si può facilmente constatare che determinati argomenti tornano in scritti diversi e tuttavia essi sono considerati da diversa prospettiva in modo che si completino piuttosto che ripetersi. In tal senso ciascun articolo va letto a sé stante, nella sua autonomia. In linea di massima non sono stati apportati aggiornamenti bibliografici.

This volume examines the dynamic concept and changing reality of Roman citizenship from the perspective of the provinces in Rome's vast, multi-ethnic empire, both before and after Caracalla's grant of universal citizenship in 212 CE. In Greek communities, and in Jewish and Christian conceptual and actual constructed communities, the Roman definition of citizenship had a profound impact on the shape of abstract ideas of community, discourse about communal membership and peoplehood, and legal and civic models. Just as Roman citizenship was forever redefining its restrictions and becoming ever-more inclusive, so the borders of the other communities to which Greeks, Christians and Jews claimed "citizenship" were also flexible, adaptable, dynamic
