The contributors of this volume set out to explore some new approaches to the fourth-century Christian novel traditionally known as the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies or Klementia. They raise and answer questions about this narrative by approaching it as an original rhetorical, and philosophical novel. The volume seeks to improve understanding of this text as a late antique novel with its own textual unity. It pays attention both to its literary qualities as well as to the role of rhetorical education, the reception of Sophistic traditions, and ancient philosophy. It includes theological reflections and discusses the role of the Homilistic author, his skills in the field of paideia, and his reflections on truth. In this way, the contributors offer new insights into the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies as a unique novel from late antique Syria.

Le Stromate III, en 18 chapitres et 110 sections, porte sur le mariage, en trois parties principales : exposé des diverses positions adverses (chap. 1-4), synthétisées et réfutées en deux groupes, les licencieux et les encratites (chap. 5-11), réfutées à nouveau par les Ecritures et les arguments de Clément (chap. 12-18). Ce livre est, par son ampleur et sa diversité, une source capitale pour la connaissance des doctrines multiples sur le mariage qui se sont affrontées au IIe siècle chez les chrétiens et de l'émergence d'une orthopraxie.Aux interprétations contrastées de l'enseignement de Paul et des évangiles, viennent s'associer des pratiques et des théories portées par des paroles et des textes, auxquels Clément donne accès, qui relèvent de traditions qu'on appelle aujourd'hui apocryphes. Un tel document n'a pas manqué, dans les décennies récentes, de susciter l'intérêt non seulement des historiens du christianisme et des théologiens, mais aussi des anthropologues et des philosophes, en particulier Michel Foucault dans le récent volume posthume, Les Aveux de la chair.Tout en étant en accord avec les philosophes grecs, platoniciens, aristotéliciens et surtout stoïciens, Clément s'efforce de tout faire remonter aux prescriptions du Logos, qu'elles s'énoncent dans la nature, la raison humaine ou la parole de Dieu, et donne à l'enseignement sur le mariage une portée théologique : la procréation humaine, pour autant qu'elle aura été accomplie selon la loi, est " à la ressemblance " de la Création divine.Rejetant les deux excès (licence ou rejet pur et simple) et soucieux de définir une voie moyenne en promouvant une continence vraiment chrétienne, l'Alexandrin apporte ici la première réflexion approfondie sur les développements du Nouveau Testament et une nouveauté par rapport aux précédents philosophiques : les considérations sur les plaisirs de l'amour et les réflexions sur le mariage, séparées jusque-là, sont réunies dans l'examen des relations entre époux, lequel devient un objet " relativement autonome ".

Clement of Alexandria's Stromateis were celebrated in antiquity but modern readers have often skirted them as a messy jumble of notes. When scholarship on Greco-Roman miscellanies took off in the 1990s, Clement was left out as 'different' because he was Christian. This book interrogates the notion of Clement's 'Christian difference' by comparing his work with classic Roman miscellanies, especially those by Plutarch, Pliny, Gellius, and Athenaeus. The comparison opens up fuller insight into the literary and theological character of Clement's own oeuvre. Clement's Stromateis are contextualised within his larger literary project in Christian formation, which began with the Protrepticus and the Paedagogus and was completed by the Hypotyposeis. Together, this stepped sequence of works structured readers' reorientation, purification, and deepening prayerful 'converse' with God. Clement shaped his miscellanies as an instrument for encountering the hidden God in a hidden way, while marvelling at the variegated beauty of divine work refracted through the variegated beauty of his own textuality.

Clément d'Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l'un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Son enseignement, tout autant pétri de la Bible que de la pensée grecque, nous révèle la nature des débats aux premières heures de l'expansion du christianisme. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l'Église. C'est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l'Église à partir de l'être et la mission du Logos divin. L'analyse du discours de Clément sur l'Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l'identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement's discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.
