La rédaction finale de la Torah est communément datée de la période perse (entre 400 et 350 avant notre ère). C’est à partir de cette époque que « la Bible » aurait occupé une place centrale dans la religion judéenne. L’artisan de cette réforme aurait été un grand prêtre venu de Babylone, Esdras. Il aurait bénéficié du soutien officiel d’un roi perse. Cette version des faits s’est imposée depuis que les juifs et les chrétiens ont reconnu le statut de « texte sacré » au livre d’Esdras. Aujourd’hui encore la plupart des spécialistes retiennent ce scénario, au moins dans ce qu’il a d’essentiel: « la Torah serait devenue la clé de voûte de la religion judéenne à la période perse ». Il existe pourtant une autre version dont le scénario est identique, mais dans laquelle les noms et les dates sont autres. La réforme aurait eu lieu, non pas à la période perse, mais deux siècles plus tard à la période hellénistique. La Torah aurait bien été promulguée par un grand prêtre, mais son nom serait Siméon fils d’Onias. Il serait bien venu de l’étranger, mais d’Égypte. Il aurait bénéficié du soutien d’un roi étranger, mais d’un roi grec d’Alexandrie. Le texte fondateur des religions juive et chrétienne a-t-il été « écrit » par Esdras pour une communauté judéenne encore imprégnée de sa culture traditionnelle ou par Siméon pour une élite sacerdotale largement ouverte à la culture hellénistique ? Son auteur est-il un personnage de légende dont on ignore tout, ou un acteur connu de l’histoire politique, sociale et culturelle de la Judée de 200 avant notre ère ?

Back cover: This volume surveys the brief accounts of Israelite history written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek between the third century BCE and the first century CE and found in compositions that did not enter the Hebrew biblical canon. Engaging in a detailed discussion of study cases and collective analysis of over forty texts, it demonstrates the affinities this category exhibits with "biblical" summaries and the influence it betrays of Hellenistic and early-Roman period literary conventions. Inter alia, the novel features it displays and new topics with which it deals, the focus it places on individual figures, and the interest it displays in the temporal axis of history reflect a process of cross-fertilization. The reviews of Israelite history that date from this period are thus hybrid artifacts that blend the conventions governing the "biblical" historical summaries with those of other literary models - such as genealogies, lists of examples, and apocalyptic historiography.

In Waters of the Exodus, Nathalie LaCoste examines the Diasporic Jewish community in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt and their relationship to the hydric environment. By focusing on four retellings of the exodus narrative composed by Egyptian Jews-Artapanus, Ezekiel the Tragedian, Wisdom of Solomon, and Philo of Alexandria-she lays out how the hydric environment of Egypt, and specifically the Nile river, shaped the transmission of the exodus story. Mapping these observations onto the physical landscape of Egypt provides a new perspective on the formation of Jewish communities in Egypt.

This interdisciplinary collection of fifteen papers probes key aspects of the First Jewish Revolt from a wide variety of perspectives: archeology, Roman military, administration, and ethos, Second Temple Jewish society, and rabbinic and early Christian reception. Delivered at a large international conference organized at the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem in 2018, the contributions respond to many classic questions about the reliability of Josephus and interact in various ways with Steve Mason’s major study, A History of the Jewish War (Cambridge, 2016), including his controversial views on the scope and religious nature of the conflict. Mason’s own response comprises the final chapter.
