Abstract

"What is the true purpose of welfare state? Whom does it seek to support and why? What are its implications for governments and policy makers in an uncertain economic landscape? The fifth edition of this successful textbook tackles these key questions by arguing that the welfare state is not only a means to support the underprivileged, but rather a necessary system to secure economic efficiency in areas where private markets would be inefficient or could not exist at all. Divided into four parts, Economics of the Welfare State focusses upong the fundamentals of the welfare system, including cash benefits, the health service, and education. Rather than simply addressing general public economics, the text fully explores issues such as pensions and poverty relief, making this a unique and invaluable resource for students of public sector economics. With emphasis on UK and European welfare systems, the text allows students to see the direct relevance of their learning in a real-world setting, while a wealth of international examples widen students' understanding of its application in a global context."

Abstract

This new fourth edition of this successful textbook, discusses the different parts of the welfare system and in particular, cash benefits, the health service and education. The text argues that the welfare state exists not just to help the underprivileged, but also for efficiency reasons, in areas where private markets would be inefficient or would not exist at all. The book has a new, separate chapter on the economics of higher education and it contains increased references to developments in the EU. Also included are a number of new, largely forward looking topics: - extended discussion of insurance to cover disability and long-term care - challenges to the welfare state including demographic change, globalization, changes in family structure and changes in the structure of jobs - debates about the welfare state Suitable for students of both economics related disciplines, the book encourages greater accessibility for students and contains a non-technical appendix in every chapter, diagrams, additional readings, worked examples and end of chapter discussion questions. COMPANION WEB SITE The book will be supported by a companion web site containing PowerPoint slides, weblinks and further reading.
